Nicholls takes on the Stephen F. Lumberjacks at 6 p.m. tomorrow in Nacogdoches
NACOGDOCHES, Texas. – After taking on the country's second-best scoring offense on Thursday and winning, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team turns its attention to the nation's No. 1 scoring defense in taking on conference-leading Stephen F. Austin Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. in Nacogdoches.
Nicholls is coming off of a big 93-78 win over the Northwestern State Demons on Thursday night, handing the Demons their first loss at home this season in the process. The win improved the team's record to 4-11 on the year and 3-2 in Southland play. Nicholls is undefeated when scoring 80 or more points in a game this season, winning two of its last two games on the road.
Fred Hunter scored his fifth double-double of the season on Thursday, pouring in 27 points and adding 10 rebounds in the win, as three Colonels scored in double figures with
Jeremy Smith's 18 and
Dantrell Thomas' 17. Nicholls shot 50 percent as a team on the night, but did a lot of damage at the free throw line going 27-for-40, taking 34 in the second half alone.
Going into the game against NSU, the Colonels were going to need to try and keep pace with the Demons offensively, whereas on Saturday against the Lumberjacks the tempo will be drastically different as Stephen F. Austin will wear down the clock and play at a slower pace.
Stephen F. Austin is has a scoring margin of 17.6 points per game, as the Lumberjacks hold its opponents to just 49.4 per contest on average, while scoring 67 points per outing. They've held every opponent this season to less than 70 points, and have over 40 consecutive games dating back to last season of doing so. Teams are shooting just 37 percent against the 'Jacks defense, while turning the ball over nearly 18 times a game.
The Lumberjacks have won the last three meetings against the Colonels, as two of those three games went into overtime. In last year's game, Nicholls fell behind by 12 points before going on a big run late to force overtime and tie the game in the final seconds. In overtime, the Lumberjacks were 7-of-8 from the free throw line to put the game away, as both teams managed to make just two shots from the field in the extra five minutes.
The radio broadcast of the game will begin with the Colonel Countdown pregame show, beginning 15 minutes prior to the start of the contest.
