Ladyjacks Drop Colonels, 74-66

Final Stats NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team shot a blistering 63 percent in the first 10 minutes to take a 12-point lead against Stephen F. Austin, but the Ladyjacks ended the first half with a 25-6 run and the Colonels never recovered as they dropped their second straight game, falling 74-66  Saturday at William R. Johnson Coliseum.

With the loss, Nicholls falls to 11-6 on the year and 3-3 in Southland play. SFA improves to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in conference.

Alisha Allen led Nicholls with 21 points and 10 rebounds for the third double-double, while LiAnn McCarthy scored 13 of her team-high 17 points in the first half, which tied her season-high.  Jenny Nash rounded out the scoring leaders with 13 points.

In the first 10 minutes, the Colonels were red-hot from the field as they built a 26-14 advantage. McCarthy had 11 points in the stretch and Nicholls took advantage of all four of SFA's turnovers, turning them into eight points.

The Ladyjacks then caught fire, hitting three 3-pointers in a six-minute span to go on a 15-0 run. KK Babin, who had nine points and five assists, ended the run with a jumper before Allen gave the Colonels back the lead at 30-29. The advantage would be short lived as the Ladyjacks knocked down two more from downtown, hitting seven threes in the first half to build a 39-32 lead at the break.

Early In the second half, the Colonels cut the deficit to four points twice on a basket-and-one from Allen and a layup from Scott, but SFA pushed it back to seven on another 3-pointer. The Ladyjacks maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way before going on for the eight-point victory.

Nicholls shot 39.1 percent from the field and made only 6-of-22 from behind the arc. SFA shot 41.5 percent overall and hit nine 3-pointers. The Ladyjacks, who were led by Tierany Henderson with 15 points, had a slight edge on the boards, 41-35.

The Colonels will return home for the next two games, starting on Thursday, Jan. 24, for Stuff Stopher against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
