The Colonels host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday for Stuff Stopher Night
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to put an end to its two-game losing skid as the Colonels host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday at Stopher Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The matchup can be heard on KNSU 91.5 FM, with video streaming available on
Colonels All-Access. As part of “Stuff Stopher” night, fans attending the game are encouraged to wear red. In addition, a pregame tailgate event featuring food and live music will begin at 3 p.m. outside of Stopher Gym. It will also be Faculty and Staff Appreciation night, with all Nicholls faculty and staff receiving free admission with their ID.
Nicholls (11-6, 3-3) is coming off back-to-back losses for the first time this season, both which saw the Colonels hold a double-digit lead in the first half. Nicholls led by 15 at Northwestern State and 12 at Stephen F. Austin before suffering the setbacks.
Nicholls is averaging 65 points per game this season, overall and in conference. The 74-66 loss at SFA was the first time this season that Nicholls was defeated when scoring at least 60 points. The Colonels had won all 10 games when scoring 60 points or more.
Senior
Alisha Allen recorded her third double-double of the season, finishing with 21 points and 10 rebounds at SFA. Allen, who is sixth in the Southland in scoring (15.0 ppg), has scored in double figures in all but one game.
The game will be only the fifth home contest for Nicholls, and first since Jan. 5. The Colonels are 3-1 at home this season, scoring over 70 points and shooting nearly 50 percent. Since the start of last season, Nicholls has been solid at home, posting a 13-5 record in Stopher Gym. In four games in front of the home crowd, Allen has been close to unstoppable, averaging 19.3 points on 62.7 percent shooting. The Colonels' lone senior is also bringing in 7.8 rebounds at home and has blocked five shots.
Junior
KK Babin, who averages 12.2 points on the year, heads into the game just 22 points shy of becoming the 11th Colonel to score 1,000. Although Babin has been a prolific scorer, she has been relentless in setting up her teammates since the start of conference play, averaging six assists per game.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-16, 0-6) heads into the game with a seven-game losing streak, which includes all six Southland games. Under first-year head coach Royce Chadwick, the Islanders have had their own second-half troubles lately after surrendering halftime leads in the last three games. In the previous two outings, Corpus Christi had the advantage at halftime against Central Arkansas and Lamar, which are both currently tied for first in the Southland.
As a team, TAMCC is second-to-last in the NCAA in scoring, averaging 45.7 points per game. On the year, the Islanders have scored 60 points only once and haven't notched more than 47 in conference play. Janae Blount is the Islanders' top scorer, averaging 9.1 points.
Despite their struggles this season, the Islanders hold a 4-2 advantage over Nicholls in the all-time series. Nicholls lost the only meeting last season, 70-63, in Corpus Christi. The Islanders are 1-2 in Thibodaux with their win coming in the 2006-07 season.
