Defense Fuels Colonels Past Islanders, 70-53

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team racked up 21 steals which turned into 32 points as the Colonels bounced back from its mini-skid with a 70-53 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday night at Stopher Gym.

Nicholls improves to 12-6 on the year and 4-3 in conference play. With nine games left to play, the Colonels are just three wins away from tying their program-record of 15 victories, set last season. For Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-17, 0-7), the loss was the Islanders eighth straight.

Alisha Allen headed the Colonel offense, scoring 20 points on 9-of-21 shooting. Allen, who came into the game averaging 19.3 points at home, has scored at least 20 in the last two games. The Garland, Texas native was dominant inside as the Colonels outscored AMCC 42-18 in the paint.

Freshman Emani White sparked the offense off the bench, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-14 from the field. White checked in with the Colonels up 9-6 after five minutes, and the lead extended to 19-11 after she nailed a jumper at the 11:05 mark.

Corpus Christ scored the next five points, but Nicholls grabbed the momentum with a 14-4 run before the break. White capped off the half with a layup off a KK Babin assist, making the score 35-27 at the half.

In the second period, the Colonels continued to force the Islanders into turnovers. Corpus Christi gave up the ball 16 times in the final 20 minutes as Nicholls led by double digits for most of the half. The largest lead for Nicholls was 17 points, which the Colonels reached four times, including the final score.

Nicholls finished with 14 assists versus 14 turnovers, led by Babin who dished out eight. Babin scored 12 points and had a career-high seven steals, while Jenny Nash also had a career-high in steals, recording six on the night.

The Colonels shot 40.8 percent from the field and couldn't find their stroke from behind the arc, making 3-of-20. AMCC shot 39.2 percent and had five 3-pointers. Eight Islanders scored, led by Taryn Gregory with nine points.

Nicholls wraps up its two-game homestand on Saturday, Jan. 26  against Sam Houston State. Tipoff at Stopher Gym is scheduled for 2 p.m.
