The Colonels will host Oral Roberts for the first time in program history
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to rebound from its Southland Conference opening loss as the Colonels host Oral Roberts Saturday at 2 p.m. in Stopher Gym.
The game will be broadcast on the Colonel Sports Radio Network on KNSU 91.5 FM and can be watched live on
Colonels All-Access.
The meeting between the programs will be the first ever as ORU (4-7, 1-0) is playing its first season in the Southland. The Golden Eagles came from the Summit League where they recorded three consecutive 20-win seasons.
In the Colonels' conference opener against Central Arkansas on Thursday,
Alisha Allen scored a team-high 21 points, but UCA never trailed in the game as the Sugar Bears handed Nicholls only its fifth home loss in the last 17 games. Nicholls (8-4, 0-1) was previously 2-0 at home this season with both wins coming in November.
Allen upped her scoring average to 14.3 points per game and is followed by
KK Babin (12.5), who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
LiAnn McCarthy (8.6) rounded out the leading scorers in the loss with 11.
Despite the 16-point loss, the Colonels still remain as one of the best shooting teams in the SC, ranking second in field goal (.423) and 3-point percentage (.322), while leading the league at the free throw line (.713). However, Nicholls surrendered over 70 points for the third time this season, which has resulted in three losses.
The Golden Eagles feature the league's top shooting offense, ranking first in field goal (.434) and 3-point percentage (.344). In Thursday night's 81-62 win at Southeastern, ORU shot 54.7 percent from the field and connected on four 3-pointers.
Kevi Luper, the nation's 11th leading scorer (21.2 ppg), and Sarah Shelton scored 18 points each to lead the Golden Eagles against the Lady Lions. Jaci Bigham notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists. Bigham currently ranks 10th in the NCAA with 6.8 assists per game.
Following Saturday's matchup, the Colonels will hit the road for their next four games, starting on Monday at McNeese State.
