Colonels Head to South Alabama for Midweek Tilt

THIBODAUX, La.  – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will take on South Alabama at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at the Mitchell Center.

The game will be broadcast live on KNSU 91.5 FM. Pregame coverage will start at approximately 6:45 p.m.

Nicholls (1-1) heads into the matchup against South Alabama (0-2) looking to forget about its 111-58 loss at No. 9 Baylor. The Colonels were held to 35 percent from the field and had 21 turnovers on the night which led to 28 points for Baylor. Although Nicholls was overmatched against the talented Lady Bears, freshman Marina Lilly held her own down low, scoring 14 points on 7 of 9 shooting.

Emani White started the game hot, scoring Nicholls' first eight points to give her squad an early lead, but the sophomore was held to 1 of 10 shooting the rest of the way. With her career-high 33 points in the season opener, White leads the team in scoring after two games with a 22.5 point per game average. Lilly is second at an even 14.0 followed by senior KK Babin at 11.5 ppg.

Turnovers and rebounding were an issue for the Colonels last season, and the former has been a problem in the first two games while the jury is still out on the latter. The Colonels have 47 turnovers after two contests, with 26 coming against NAIA SUNO. Nicholls showed vast improvement in rebounding with a plus-20 day against the Lady Knights, but the much bigger Lady Bears dominated the boards, 45-23.

USA has lost its first two games of the season, falling on the road to Indiana State (53-40) and Southern Miss (93-68). The Lady Jaguars also needed two overtimes in their exhibition against NAIA Mobile to knock off the Lady Rams 98-89.

South Alabama features two players averaging double figures in scoring, led by Meghan Dunn with 12.5 points per game. While Dunn is shooting only .381 from the field, she has connected on 5 of 9 3-pointers. Ronneka Robertson is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11 points.

South Alabama has a commanding 15-2 lead in the all-time series. The Colonels' first win came back in 1978-79 and the most recent victory was a 69-68 win in the '97-98 campaign. USA has won the last four including a 63-50 triumph in the teams' last matchup in 2009-10.

Following Wednesday night's game, Nicholls will return home on Saturday, Nov. 23 to host Texas Southern. Tipoff at Stopher Gym is scheduled for 2 p.m.
