Jenny Nash matched her career-high with 22 points and hit a key 3-pointer late in the game that sparked a 13-0 run as the Nicholls State University women's basketball team won its seventh consecutive home game with a 79-70 victory over Texas Southern on Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gym.
Nicholls improves to 3-1 on the year while Texas Southern falls to 3-2. The Colonels remain undefeated against the Lady Tigers with a 4-0 all-time mark.
Nash led three Colonels who scored in double figures as
Emani White and
Jasmine Scott added 18 points each. Nash and Scott scored 13 and 10 points, respectively, in the first half as Nicholls trailed 37-33 at the break. White did most of her damage in the second half, pouring in 15 points.
Texas Southern, who was without their leading scorer Jazzmin Parker, also had three players in double figures, led by a game-high 24 points by Brianna Sidney. Alexus Johnson finished with 16 points while Morgan Simmons had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
In the early going, the teams battled back-and-forth as neither had a lead of more than three points in the first 12 minutes. Following a jumper by White, Texas Southern went on a 10-0 run to take a 29-18 lead at the 5:45 mark.
In the final five minutes of the half, Nash scored all 13 of her points, knocking down three 3-pointers and two jumpers to pull Nicholls to with 35-31. The teams traded buckets in the final minute as Nicholls went into the locker room trailing for the second time this season.
Babin sank a 3-pointer on the Colonels' first possession of the second half and Nicholls regained the lead at the 17:21 mark after
Marina Lilly's basket-and-one gave the Colonels a 43-42 advantage.
Down one, Texas Southern answered with three 3-pointers for an 11-1 run to lead 59-50 with 11 minutes to go. But Nicholls would outscore the Lady Tigers 29-11 the rest of way.
The run started when Nash capped an 11-2 spurt with a 3-pointer to bring Nicholls within two. After a pair of Lady Tiger free throws, the Houston native knocked down another bucket from behind the arc with five minutes remaining. Two free throws by White put Nicholls up 64-63, but Sidney scored on a layup before hitting a 3-pointer to give TSU a 68-66 lead with three minutes to go.
On the Colonels' next possession, Nash gave the Colonels the lead for good as she matched her career-high with her sixth 3-pointer of the game. A basket-and-one by Scott pushed Nicholls' lead to 71-68 and the senior would come up with a putback with 50 seconds remaining. Nicholls added six more points in the final minute before Texas Southern scored a layup to make the final.
Nicholls shot 47.5 percent from the field and made 9 of 27 from behind the arc. Nash finished 8 of 14 and 6 of 11 from behind the arc while Scott connected on 9 of 11 from the field.
Texas Southern finished the day shooting 51 percent and held a 32-29 edge on the boards. Nicholls was able to get 15 offensive rebounds for 28 second chance points.
The Colonels return to action in Anchorage, Alaska in the Great Alaskan Shootout, starting Tuesday, Nov. 26 against Georgetown. Tipoff against the Lady Hoyas is scheduled for 9 p.m. central.
