Cold Shooting Dooms Colonels against Georgetown in Great Alaskan Shootout

ANCHORAGE, Alaska  – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team made eight 3-pointers to lead Georgetown by six early in the second half, but the Colonels went ice cold as the Lady Hoyas used a 24-2 run to defeat Nicholls 67-55 in the opening game of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaskan Shootout Tuesday night at Sullivan Arena.

Nicholls falls to 3-2 on the year and will play in the third-place game on Wednesday against either host Alaska Anchorage or UC Riverside. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Sophomore Emani White led Nicholls in scoring with a game-high 18 points, but made only 5 of 21 from the field. Senior KK Babin also had an off-night shooting, scoring 11 points on 4 of 16, but did have a game-high seven assists. Junior Jenny Nash rounded out the leading scorers for the Colonels, adding 13 points on 5 of 11 from the field and 3 of 6 from behind the arc.

Nicholls finished the day shooting 31.3 percent from the field and 30.3 percent from 3-point range. The Colonels made 10 treys on the night, but all but two came before Georgetown's decisive run.

The Colonels put up 18 3-pointers in the first half, connecting on six to lead 28-26 at the break. A 3-pointer by White helped Nicholls build an early 7-2 lead before the Colonels knocked down three straight from downtown to go up 21-9.

Georgetown (3-2) came back with back-to-back field goals to cut the deficit to single digits, but White drained another 3-ball to make the score 24-13 with less than nine minutes until intermission. But the shooting woes would start there as the Lady Hoyas outscored Nicholls 13-4 to close out the half.

After the break, Andrea White, who had 16 points for Georgetown, tied the game at 28 with a bucket before Emani White and Babin sank 3-pointers to give Nicholls a six-point lead. However, the Colonels would go scoreless over the next three minutes as Georgetown took their first lead with a 12-0 run.

Marina Lilly, who had nine points and nine rebounds for the Colonels, ended the drought at the 15:43 mark, but the Lady Hoyas put together another 12-0 spurt to take a commanding 52-36 lead with 12 minutes remaining. From then on, Georgetown led by as much as 19 and never let the deficit get any small than 12 points.

The Lady Hoyas shot 41.9 percent from the field and dominated inside, outrebounding Nicholls 49-32 and had 40 points in the paint versus only 14 by the Colonels. Center Natalie Butler led Georgetown with 17 points and 14 rebounds.

The Colonels shot only six free throws, but converted on five. Nicholls also dished out season-high 18 assists while turning the ball over a season-low 13 times.
