Colonels Fall To Dons, 77-48

Final Stats SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – With a slim, two-point lead nearly midway through the first half, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team would be unable to hold the home-standing San Francisco Dons down for long as they went on a 15-0 run to pull away for good and go on to defeat the Colonels 77-48 Friday night in California.

The loss snaps Nicholls' (2-5) two-game winning streak heading into the contest, while the Dons improved its record to an even 6-4 overall and 5-3 at home in War Memorial Gym.

Nicholls was held to a season-low 48 points in the loss, finishing the game with just two players scoring in double figures in senior guards Dantrell Thomas with 13 and Jeremy Smith with 12. The Colonels shot 32 percent in the contest and connected on just three of 22 3-point attempts on the night.

San Francisco had four players end the night with double-digit points, led by Cole Dickerson's 20 on 7 of 10 shooting from the floor. The Dons ran through the Colonel defense to the tune of 47 second-half points on a 76 percent shooting clip in the final 20 minutes of play.

With just one point scored between the two teams after the first three minutes of play had already passed, USF scored six more points afterword to open the game on a seven-point swing. However, the Colonels stormed back and went on an 11-2 run to take an 11-9 lead with 12:08 remaining in the first half.

Unfortunately, that's was the best stretch Nicholls would have on the night as they did not score for eight minutes as the Dons scored 15 unanswered points to go up 23-11 and go into the halftime break leading 30-17. USF only had two more made shots than the Colonels after the first 20 minutes had expired, but the Dons hit six of their eight 3-pointers during the period to pull away and take a big lead.

13 points was the closest the Colonels would get to USF, that coming early in the second half as the Dons routinely led by more than 28 points for more than half of the second period.

After shooting just 28 percent in the first half, the Colonels made just one more shot in the second half than they did in the first, opening the second period scoring 11 points to pull within 14 of the Dons, but another long scoring draught that this time lasted seven minutes allowed USF to go up 32 points and put the game out of reach for good.

Sam McBeath led the bench in scoring in his second game back from injury, leading the team with five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Nicholls will be back in action on Wednesday night, taking on the IUPUI Jaguars at 6:30 p.m. in Indianapolis.
