Colonels Fend Off Ladyjacks, 65-64

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – For the second straight game, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team saw a double-digit lead wither to a one possession game in the final seconds, but once again the Colonels prevailed as Nicholls staved off a comeback by Stephen F. Austin, holding on for a 65-64 win Thursday night at Stopher Gym.

With the win, Nicholls (15-8, 7-5) matches its program single-season record of 15 victories, set last season, but more importantly, move to a fourth place tie with McNeese in the Southland Conference standings. SFA falls to 10-14 and 5-8 after losing for the second straight time in Thibodaux.

Alisha Allen led Nicholls, which shot only 36 percent from the field, with 14 points. KK Babin had 12 points with one 3-pointer and Jasmine Scott came off the bench for 11 points and five rebounds.

After a first half that saw a combined 20 made field goals, Nicholls expanded its 29-26 lead to double digits when LiAnn McCarthy sank a jumper at the 12:54 mark. The bucket was part of a 13-2 run, which was capped on Babin's 3-pointer, putting Nicholls up 49-34.

The lead remained in double figures until Tierany Henderson hit back-to-back shot from behind the arc, cutting the deficit to 56-49 with less than five minutes remaining.

With 60 seconds left, SFA's Porsha Roberts made a basket-and-one, making the score 63-60. After a pair of free throws by Babin, Roberts came through again, this time scoring on a putback. LiAnn McCarthy looked to push the lead back to three but came up empty on two free throws with 14 seconds left.

Following a timeout, Annette Davis got a great look under the basket with three ticks on the clock but couldn't convert as Nicholls escaped with a 65-64 win.

The Colonels took advantage of 24 Ladyjack turnovers, turning them into 24 points. Despite being outsized, Nicholls was only outrebounded 40-38.

Roberts led SFA with a game-high 17 points, with Henderson finishing with 15 and Davis chipping in with 12. The Ladyjacks shot 39 percent, including 28 percent from behind the arc.

For the Colonels, McCarthy added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Hope Pawlowski provide eight points and three steals off the bench.

Nicholls will wrap up its homestand on Saturday as the Colonels take on Northwestern State. Tipoff at Stopher Gym is scheduled for 2 p.m.
