Colonel Hoops Takes On Lamar Tuesday

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team hits the road for its final four road games of the season this week, beginning on Tuesday night as the Colonels travel to Beaumont to take on the Lamar Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. at the Montagne Center.

Due to the LHSAA state playoffs, Tuesday's game will be aired live on KNSU 91.5 FM as well as online for Colonels All-Access subscribers.

The Colonels saw their losing streak extend to five straight games on Saturday night, falling to Northwestern State 84-79 in Thibodaux to close out its three-game home stand. Nicholls held a 13-point lead in the second half, before the Demons were able to claw back and eventually tie the game late before fending off a Colonel rally late to win in Thibodaux. The loss dropped the Colonels to 6-17 on the season and 5-8 in league play, with a one-game lead over McNeese State for the sixth spot in the standings.

The loss to Northwestern State was just the third time this season that the Colonels have not won after holding the lead at halftime, as the Demons became the third team this season to beat Nicholls when making 30 or more shots from the field in a contest. Nicholls also has not won a game this season when giving up 80 or more points to its opponents, as the Demons shot 61-percent in the second half alone, while forcing the Colonels into over 20 turnovers.

Senior Fred Hunter has continued his hot play as of late, scoring 24 points on Saturday for his fifth-straight game of 20 or more, as well as pulling down ten rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. Hunter still leads the league in scoring averaging 19.6 points per game so far this season, while sitting fourth in rebounding with a 7.6 average and fourth in field goal percentage with a 56-percent clip from the floor. Dantrell Thomas also had a solid game for the Colonels, scoring 22 points with eight rebounds for the ninth 20-point game of his career on Saturday.

Nicholls has trotted out a different lineup for the last three games, as Shane Rillieux missed his first game in a Nicholls uniform over the weekend, 52 in all, after sustaining a head injury on Thursday against Stephen F. Austin giving Amin Torres his first start. Although Torres fouled out, the Colonels still got solid play from Linden Smith-Hyde and JaMarkus Horace, as two Smith-Hyde 3-pointers tied the game twice in the final minutes, while Horace scored nine points with six rebounds.

The only team on a worse slide than the Colonels right now is the Cardinals, who at 3-22 have established a new mark for losses in a season in the program's storied history. At just 1-12 in league play, Lamar is the only other team in the Southland other than Nicholls to have played all Division I opponents this season, as they spent the first 11 games away from the Montagne Center to start the season. Lamar's Stan Brown is the only player scoring in double figures this season, averaging 11.2 points per game, which would be one of the lowest if the season ended today since 1951-52.

The radio broadcast of the game will begin with the Colonel Countdown pregame show, beginning 15 minutes prior to the start of the contest.
