Colonels Fall To UTSA, 76-58

Final Stats SAN ANTONIO, Texas. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team played 11 players against the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday afternoon, but the Colonels couldn't stop three UTSA players from scoring in the high double figures as Nichols fell 76-58 at the Convocation Center in San Antonio on Saturday.

With the loss the Colonels fall to 7-18 on the season and 3-12 in road games, as UTSA moves to 7-19 on the year and gets just its second win at home this season. The Roadrunners have now won 16 of the last 18 against Nicholls, as the Colonels have dropped consecutive games to UTSA.

One notable absence from the contest was senior Fred Hunter, as the Colonels were led in scoring and rebounding by freshman JaMarkus Horace who scored a team high 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds with two blocks in 29 minutes. Dantrell Thomas scored ten points and dished out four assists, while Amin Torres came off the bench to score ten on 4-of-9 shooting.

UTSA's Kannon Burrage, the leading scorer in the WAC, scored a game-high 17 points as he, Jeromie Hill and Michael Hale III combined for 49 of the Roadrunners' 76 points.

Nicholls made one less shot than the Roadrunners on the night, and had three less 3-pointers, but the difference in the game came at the free throw line as UTSA was 17-for-22 while Nicholls was 4-for-7, as all four makes came from Thomas on the afternoon. The Colonels were 24-for-58 from the field for a 41-percent clip on the night, as Torres, Pedro Maciel and Linden Smith-Hyde connected on all six Nicholls 3-pointers, while the Roadrunners hit seven of their nine in the first half.

Going into the locker room down 45-33, Nicholls barely outscored the Roadrunners 11-9 over the first six minutes of the second half trailing 54-44 with 13 minutes left in the game. It was at that point when UTSA went on its biggest run of the game scoring 13 unanswered points over the next four minutes to take its largest lead of the game, leading by 23 up 67-44. The run featured six made free throws, a jumper and 3-pointer to ice the game holding Nicholls to just 14 points for the remainder of the contest.

After shooting 53 percent in the first half, the Roadrunners cooled off dramatically hitting just nine total shots in the second, but went to the line 15 times making 11, keeping Nicholls away from the charity stripe entirely in the first half while making 6-of-7 attempts.

Nicholls did hold the advantage in paint points 32-28, and in bench points 16-14, while UTSA turned 14 Colonel turnovers into 19 points. Although UTSA outrebounded Nicholls 35-30, each team grabbed 13 from the offensive end, as the Roadrunners capitalized on the opportunities holding a 19-6 advantage in second chance points.

The Colonels return to Southland Conference play on Thursday, traveling to take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats at 7:45 p.m. in Huntsville.
