Colonels Win Series with Shutout Of Towson, 1-0

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – With a chance at a second-straight weekend series win, the Nicholls State University baseball team got a gem of a game from starter Kory Delange while scoring the winning run off of a sacrifice fly from Keith Cormier in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Towson Tigers 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Thibodaux.

With the win the Colonels improve to 5-2 on the year and 3-1 at Ray E. Didier Field, while the Tigers fall to 4-2 on the season dropping back-to-back games after winning their first four of the season.

In what turned out to be a pitcher's duel, neither Delange (2-0) nor Towson starter Brandon Gonnella (1-1) had yet to give up a run even though both teams had their chances to try and plate runs early in the contest. But in the sixth, Mike Barba put down a perfectly placed bunt and advanced to second on a throwing error from Towson third baseman Zach Fisher with no outs on the board. A grounder by Lyons moved Barba to third and in the very next at bat, Cormier hit a deep fly ball to centerfield allowing Barba to score the game's only run and give Nicholls the 1-0 lead.

Delange powered through to the next inning after the Colonels scored and that would be enough as the 6-5 righty kept Towson off of the board and would exit in the eighth as Marc Picciola and Jordan McCoy pitched each of the next two innings to preserve the shutout. Delange held the Tigers to just five hits on the day, with four walks and four strikeouts. Picciola and McCoy faced just seven batters combined in those final two innings as McCoy earned his second save of the season after getting his first last night.

The Nicholls defense also played a big role in the shutout, turning two big double plays in the game to get out of some tough innings, as Towson left eight men on base over the course of the game. After committing three errors in the opener on Friday, the Colonel defense did not have another for the rest of the series while the Tigers' only one came on Sunday.

The Colonels finished with eight hits, as Barba and Cormier each finished with two while Matt Richard, Seth Stevens, Tyler Duplantis and Leo Vargas all had one. The Colonels left nine runners stranded in the game, but got six hits off of Gonnella before he exited the game in the sixth, giving up the unearned run with six strikeouts. His replacement in Nick Cioffi pitched the final two innings for the Tigers giving up two hits with two walks and a strikeout.

The Colonels return to the diamond on Tuesday, closing out their five-game home stand against the Tulane Green Wave at 6:30 p.m. in Thibodaux.
