The Colonels will be going for their 14th win of the season
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to sweep the season series against Southeastern Louisiana for the first time since the 1998-99 as the Colonels host the Lady Lions on Saturday at noon in Stopher Gym.
The game will be broadcast on KNSU 91.5 FM, with a live video stream available on
Colonels All-Access.
Nicholls (13-8, 5-5), coming off a 68-62 win at Central Arkansas, will play its next three games at home, looking to stay in contention for the Southland Conference Tournament. The Colonels are sixth in the standings, but are just two games behind second-place Lamar, which Nicholls has yet to face this season.
KK Babin (13 ppg) led Nicholls on offense at UCA, scoring a career-high 32 points while matching her personal best of six 3-pointers. On defense, the Colonels continued to force takeaways as Nicholls recorded 14 steals on 24 Sugar Bear turnovers. In conference play, the Colonels lead the league in steals, averaging 10.1 per game. Nicholls has two players –
Jasmine Scott and
Jenny Nash – in the top 5 of the SLC in steals, with each averaging two per game.
Nicholls features the league's second highest field goal percentage (.431) in conference, while Southeastern (9-12, 2-8) is ranked last in percentage defense (.444), just behind Nicholls (.435). In the Colonels' 71-65 win at SLU earlier this year, both teams shot over 47 percent from the field.
The Lady Lions are coming off a split last weekend, defeating UCA before falling to Oral Roberts on Saturday, 90-58. In the loss at ORU, Southeastern was held to a season-low 27.4 percent from the field and turned the ball over 22 times.
Southeastern is led by its post players, Aja Gibson and Brandi Simmons. Gibson is the top scorer, averaging 11 points and 4.5 rebounds while Simmons is third in the SLC in rebounding (8.8) and averages 10.3 points.
Nicholls will wrap up its homestand next week against Stephen F. Austin (Feb. 14) and Northwestern State (Feb. 16). Thursday's game against SFA will be broadcast on ESPN3.
