Nicholls takes on Brown and No. 4 LSU this weekend in Baton Rouge
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team heads an hour north to the Capital City to take part in a round robin event with No. 4 LSU and Brown this Saturday and Sunday that will have the Colonels playing one game tomorrow and a doubleheader on Sunday.
Tickets are currently on sale for the weekend's events, with $10 for adults and $5 for youth ages 3-12 for the games on Saturday, with Sunday's games just $5 for fans of all ages. The price of admission is good for both games on each day, as LSU will not require fans to clear the stands at the conclusion of the contests.
Nicholls begins action on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., taking on Brown for the first time in team history as the Bears kick off their season in Louisiana beginning on Friday and play four games throughout the weekend. The Colonels will turn around and play a doubleheader on Sunday, beginning with Brown at 11 a.m. before taking on LSU in the finale at 3 p.m. Sunday's contest against the Tigers will be televised live on Cox Sports Television with Lyn Rollins and Ben McDonald calling the action.
The Colonels are hoping to continue their solid play to start the season, as the team is currently 6-3 on the year after splitting a pair of midweek games against Tulane and Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday and Wednesday. Although this upcoming set isn't a traditional series, Nicholls is 4-2 on weekends with series wins over Towson and Houston Baptist.
It was a bit of an up-and-down week for the club, as the Colonels rallied to defeat Tulane at home 6-5 while dropping a heartbreaker to ULL on the road the very next night 5-1. The win over Tulane snapped an eight-game losing skid to the Green Wave which dated back to the 2006 season, as the Colonels scored two runs in the eighth to go up for good and improve to 4-1 at home this season. The next day, Nicholls stranded eight runners and scored just one run on eight hits as the Ragin Cajuns got four runs in the eighth to coast to the victory.
Even with the setback, Nicholls is hitting .292 as a team which is the third in the Southland Conference so far this season. Leading the way for the team so far is junior second baseman
Philip Lyons who is third in the conference in hits with 14, second in doubles with six and total bases with 23 with a .400 batting average which is sixth. Lyons is not the only player earning a spot in the individual batting categories, as
Matt Richard and
Ray Eureste each lead the league with two triples on the year.
With a 3.19 earned run average among its pitchers, the Colonels are tied for the second best team ERA in the Southland with Oral Roberts, paced by
Kory Delange's 0.75 mark through 12 innings pitched this season. Delange and Byrd have been stellar on the mound with 2-0 records through two weekend starts, while Saturday opener
Mike Suk has only walked two batters in two starts.
Jordan McCoy has a league-leading three saves on the season, with ten for his career dating back to last season.
Brown is opening its season this weekend, as the Ivy League members are not allowed to start the regular season until March per league rules. The Bears finished the season 9-35 last year and 6-14 in the Ivy League, with a team batting average of .282 and ERA of 8.22 a season ago.
With over 70 meetings between the two, Nicholls continues its series history against the 7-1, and nationally ranked Tigers on Sunday as the Colonels are looking for their first win over LSU since 2009 when they were the No. 1 team in the country. Over the last two games heading into the weekend, the Tigers have scored 24 runs on 33 hits, hitting seven home runs through their first eight games of the season.
The radio broadcast of the game will begin with the Colonel Countdown pregame show on KTIB 640 AM, beginning 15 minutes prior to the start of the contest.
