Nicholls takes on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday night
THIBODAUX, La. – After a thrilling comeback victory Thursday night, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team heads to Corpus Christi, to close out the road portion of the team's schedule against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at 7:30 p.m. at the American Bank Center.
It will be the final contest away from Thibodaux, as the Colonels will close out the season with their final two home games next weekend against Lamar and McNeese State in Stopher Gym.
Down by four at the break, Nicholls went on to score 39 points in the second half on the back of a 60-percent clip from the field to defeat the Sam Houston State Bearkats 56-53 Thursday night in Huntsville. The win improved the Colonels' record to 8-18 on the season and 7-8 in league play to earn the tiebreaker over the Bearkats and sit just a game back of Southeastern for the fourth spot in the league standings. The top four seeds at the end of play next week will earn a first-round bye in the conference tournament in Katy.
Nicholls earned a season sweep of the Bearkats for the first time since the 2001 season on Thursday, hoping to continue its current success over the Islanders as the squad has won the last three against TAMUCC heading into the weekend. The 56 points are the lowest in a Colonel win this year, as the team had been winless when scoring 59 points or less in a game. It was also the team's fourth win in a game decided by five points or less, as Nicholls is 4-4 in those games this season.
Dantrell Thomas led the way for the Colonels on Thursday, scoring a game-high 22 points in the win for his eighth 20-point game of his career. The junior guard scored the last seven points for Nicholls late in the second half, hitting the 3-pointer that gave the Colonels its final lead of the game. It was his third of the night, as Thomas did not have a game this season with multiple 3-point makes with just six threes on the year.
Fred Hunter returned to the court after missing the previous game against UTSA to score ten points and grab a career-high 14 rebounds against the Bearkats for his eighth double-double of the season. So far this year, Hunter has led the team in rebounding 16 times, and has collected ten double-digit rebounding games in his storied career.
The Islanders come into the contest 5-21 on the season and 4-11 in conference play after defeating Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday 78-64. Although the Islanders are a game behind Central Arkansas for eighth place, TAMUCC is ineligible for the postseason due to low APR scores. TAMUCC has won back-to-back games just once this season, and is just 3-9 at the American Bank Center this season.
The radio broadcast of the game will begin with the Colonel Countdown pregame show, beginning 15 minutes prior to the start of the contest.
