The Colonels will go for win No. 17 Saturday against the Islanders
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday at the American Bank Center in its final road game of the season as the Colonels look to stay in contention for a first-round bye in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament.
Tipoff between Nicholls (16-10, 8-7) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-23, 2-13) is scheduled for 5 p.m. The game can be listened to on KNSU 91.5 FM, or online on Colonels All-Access.
Nicholls has lost its last two games, both on the road in Texas, to slide down the standings to fifth place. With three games left in the regular season, the Colonels are hoping to close out strong in order to earn a bye in the first round of the SLC Tournament, which are rewarded to the top four teams. The top two teams, currently Lamar and Sam Houston, will earn byes into the semifinals as well.
The Islanders, who have lost their last three, have been eliminated from postseason contention be could play spoilers in the Colonels' bid for its highest seeding ever. While TAMCC has only won three games this season, it has a conference win at home against McNeese and the Nicholls is 0-3 all-time at Corpus Christi.
In the last two losses, Nicholls has shot under 40 percent from the field, making only 8-of-34 from 3-point range. Rebounding has been an issue for the Colonels as well, losing the battle of the boards by an average of nine per game.
Junior
Jasmine Scott led Nicholls off the bench at Sam Houston, scoring 14 points with nine rebounds. In the last seven games, Scott has scored at least eight points in each contest and reached double figures five times. In that span, the Baton Rouge native has shot 62.3 percent from the field and ranks second in the Southland at 59.5 percent.
The Islanders come into the matchup as one of the most offensively-challenged teams in the NCAA as only five teams are averaging fewer points per game (49.5 ppg). TAMCC does not have a player averaging double figures, but three players are scoring over seven points per contest, led by Jessica Jammer at 8.3.
In the meeting in Thibodaux, Nicholls recorded 21 steals, most in the
DoBee Plaisance era, to knock of the Islanders 70-53. Despite the victory, the Colonels trail in the all-time series, 4-3.
