The Colonels take on UNO Tuesday night in Thibodaux
THIBODAUX, La. – With a short amount of time to forget this past weekend, the Nicholls State University baseball team jumps into a hectic week on Tuesday night, hosting the UNO Privateers at Ray E. Didier Field at 6:30 p.m.
The Colonels will host the Privateers on Tuesday night, with one day off to prepare for another critical Southland Conference series against Southeastern Louisiana with the unique, home-away-home format beginning on Thursday due to the Easter holiday this weekend.
Nicholls will look to freshman
Grant Borne on Tuesday, as the lefty earned his first win in the San Jose State series two weeks ago and in his three starts has given up just two earned runs during that time. UNO will counter with freshman right-handed pitcher Daniel Martinez who is 0-2 on the season with an ERA of 12.34.
The Colonels are coming off of their first weekend series loss of the season, falling to Stephen F. Austin on Saturday and Sunday after winning the Friday contest to open Southland Conference play. Nicholls fell to 13-12 on the season and 1-2 in conference play, giving up 25 runs in the final two games after allowing just one on Friday.
Blown leads were the culprit in the final two games, as on Saturday Nicholls walked a season-high 15 batters, which were the most for any Colonel team since 2010, in a 16-8 loss. And on Sunday after giving up the lead and then getting it back in the eighth inning, the team couldn't close the door and gave up the tying run in the ninth leading to a 9-8 loss in 13 innings.
Nicholls had no trouble scoring, producing 16 runs on 24 hits in each of the final two games, hitting five of their seven doubles in the finale, paced by
Keith Cormier's 6-for-12 weekend at the plate. The junior from Channelview, Texas had three doubles, two stolen bases and three RBI on the weekend, upping his season average to .325 which is among the league leaders through the first seven weeks of the year.
Although the pitching staff had a rough weekend,
Mike Suk was able to garner his first win of the season with a dominant performance to claim the opener with a compete-game seven-hitter against the Lumberjacks. The senior scattered seven hits and gave up SFA's only run of the game in the early innings before the club would allow just one runner past second for the rest of the afternoon.
Marc Picciola bounced back after allowing all three of his inherited runners to score on Saturday to pitch three shutout innings on Sunday, allowing just one hit with one walk.
New Orleans opens up the first game of an in-season series against the Colonels on Tuesday at 4-21 on the season, dropping three games over the weekend to Grambling. However, the Privateers are riding a three-game midweek winning streak into tomorrow's game with wins over Alcorn State and Tulane to their credit.
The Privateers are batting just .244 at the plate this season, led by Andre Damiens' .333 average. Chaz Boyer leads the team in hits with 28, including five for doubles, a triple and two home runs. The UNO pitching staff has a team earned run average of 7.64, with its best pitcher in terms of average in starter Alex Smith (3.80) still winless on the season at 0-5.
The Colonels have won each of the last four meetings against New Orleans, although the Privateers lead the overall series 83-51.
