Colonels Set for Midweek Rematch against South Alabama

THIBODAUX, La. – Following three games in Birmingham, the Nicholls State University softball team will head back to Alabama for a midweek game as the Colonels will take on South Alabama Wednesday at Jaguar Field.

The Colonels (7-10) have lost three straight after going winless in the Magic City Classic. Nicholls was scheduled to play five games, but two were canceled due to cold weather.

After scoring 17 runs in their previous four games, the Colonels managed to bring only four runners across the plate last weekend. Senior Leah Andrus, who has a team-high .320 batting average, drove in two for Nicholls while Brittany Marcet and Ashton Bennett combined for six of the Colonels' 13 hits. Marcet, who is batting .319, leads the team with 10 RBIs.

In the circle, Bennett took two losses in Birmingham as her earned run average nearly doubled to 2.02. Despite the setbacks, she still ranks 10th in ERA and eighth in strikeouts (33) in the Southland.

Wednesday's opponent, South Alabama, is off to its best start in program history at 17-2. The Jaguars went on an 11-game winning streak, which included their 7-1 win at Nicholls on Feb. 20, before falling to No. 2 Alabama 4-0. Since then, USA has won its last four after a perfect weekend in Jacksonville.

The Jaguars are hitting .302 as a team with five players batting .300 or better. Julie Moss leads the way with a .375 average, while Haley Fagen has a team-high 15 RBIs. Fagen had two hits and two RBIs in the first meeting in Thibodaux.

Farish Beard posts an unblemished 7-0 record in the circle, with Hannah Campbell at 7-2 and a 1.08 ERA. Campbell held Nicholls to four hits in the Colonel home opener and struck out 10.

Following Wednesday's game, Nicholls will play four straight at home, opening up Southland Conference play Saturday with a doubleheader against Lamar. Saturday will also be Military Appreciation Day, featuring a special appearance by a U.S. Army Black Hawk Helicopter. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
