BATON ROUGE, La. – Nicholls men's tennis players
Dmitry Kozionov and
Nico Mertens received postseason honors for the second time this season as the Colonel duo was named to the 2013 All-Louisiana teams, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association announced late Saturday night.
Kozionov, who garnered first-team All-Southland in singles and doubles, was named All-Louisiana for the fourth time in his career, including three first-team selections. A native of Ivhevsk, Russia, Kozionov capped off a phenomenal career for the Colonels with a 12-6 singles record in his senior campaign. Nine of his wins came in straight sets, including a win over the 86th-ranked player in the country.
In Southland play, Kozionov went 4-1 for the fourth consecutive season and picked up his 53rd career victory with a near shutout against UNO in the Southland Conference Tournament. All of his matches in singles came at the No. 1 or No. 2 position.
Already named Southland first-team and freshman of the year, Mertens added second-team All-Louisiana to his accolades, giving Nicholls multiple all-state honorees for the second time in head coach
Meenakshi Sundaram's three years. Mertens, a native of Hilden, Germany, played at the No. 3 position, going 11-6 overall and 4-1 in conference. While notching nine straight-set victories, four of Mertens' losses came against ranked teams with three of the matches going three sets or into a tiebreaker.
