Von Breaux had a receiving touchdown Saturday morning in the Colonels first scrimmage
Colonels All-Access with Beaux Hebert
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls football team held its first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday morning, getting in around 75 plays in the two-hour session.
The Colonels started out the scrimmage in first-and-10 situations, conducting 32 plays with
Beaux Hebert,
Tuskani Figaro and
Kalen Henderson all taking snaps. The offense managed two passing plays that went for over 20 yards when
Xavier Marcus hauled in a 25-yarder from Hebert and Henderson hooked up with
Terry Lucas Jr. for a 22-yard gain.
In the middle of the session, the defense pushed the line of scrimmage back, getting a pair of 2-yard losses by TJ Lumar and
Davin Bovie on two separate rushes.
Eric Trench and
Jeremiah Thomas also got into the backfield on passing plays and were credited with sacks. The offense gained a little momentum before the end with first-down grabs by Lucas and
Brad Nelson, and a 15-yard run up the middle by
Joshua Johnson.
In the red zone plays,
Dalton Hilliard Jr. put the Colonels on the scoreboard with an 8-yard run up the middle before Figaro scrambled 22 yards through the right side for touchdown No. 2. Lucas then had a highlight play that went for 11 yards as he shook two defenders on a short catch. Johnson scored another TD for the Colonels after running virtually untouched from inside the 10.
The defense put together some highlights as well, starting with a battle of Josh's as defensive back Dewey delivered a hard shot to wide receiver Hanberry to break up a pass.
Dwayne Mitchell and
Edet Udoh were credited with sacks on back-to-back plays before Lumar made a great read on an out route to pick up the defense's first interception. Lumar then scooped up a fumble in the backfield after
Chris Bermond blew up a running play.
The field goal kickers saw action after every four plays, with starter
Andrew Dolan connecting on 2 of 4. Dolan had makes of 25 and 29, but missed attempts of 35 and 43.
Christian Prudhomme was 2 of 2, hitting on 30 and 39-yarders while
Conner Fryoux made his only attempt from 25 yards.
Redshirt freshman quarterback
Dash Duncan saw some action in the 7-on-7 drills and made the most of his snaps. After hitting a sliding
Josh Dudley for 23 yards, Duncan found a wide open Marcus for a 54-yard score. In his second-to-last pass, Duncan struck again for another 54-yard score, this time to
Von Breaux.
In the final portion – 16 plays of third down situations – Lumar recorded his second interception on just the second play. The offense bounced back with five first downs on the next seven snaps, but the defense closed out strong with sacks by
Seth Keller and
Cole Frazier.
