Head coach Charlie Stubbs and the Colonels will seek their first win in the series vs. ULL
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University football team will look to win back-to-back games against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents for the first time in program history as the Colonels wrap up four consecutive games on the road against FBS foes with a matchup against Louisiana-Lafayette at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Cajun Field.
The meeting between Nicholls (1-1) and Louisiana Lafayette (0-2) will be the fourth all-time, with ULL holding a 3-0 record. For the third time in three games, the Colonels will be nationally televised as ESPN3 will carry the broadcast live online. The game will also be aired live on the Colonel Sports Radio Network, which includes KLRZ 100.3 FM, KLEB 1600 AM and LA 106.3 Rock Hits Radio. Pregame coverage will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the Colonel Insider on LA 106.3 Rock Hits Radio. Also, the Nicholls Alumni Federation will be hosting a tailgate party at the game which will start at 3 p.m.
After going two years without a win against any NCAA school, FBS or FCS, Nicholls broke the skid in a major way by defeating Western Michigan 27-23 last Saturday. Nicholls dominated the first half, led by
Kalen Henderson who racked up nearly 250 yards on offense as the Colonels led 21-9. However, Henderson left the game with a leg injury in the second quarter and will not be available against the Ragin' Cajuns.
Head coach Charlie Stubbs will head into the matchup with two quarterbacks.
Beaux Hebert, who is probable after suffering a head injury at Oregon, will most likely get some snaps as will sophomore
Tuskani Figaro, who was one of several heroes in Saturday's win against the Broncos. Hebert saw limited action against ULL in the Ragin' Cajuns' 38-21 win in 2011, completing 3 of 6 passes for 21 yards. Figaro helped lead Nicholls to the game-winning field goals at WMU, finishing with 66 yards passing on 2 of 7 while adding 72 yards on the ground.
With Henderson out, running back
Marcus Washington leads the team in rushing yards with 105, averaging 3.4 yards per carry. Washington has found the end zone twice, both coming last weekend in Kalamazoo. He also heads the team in the passing game, catching 13 balls for 111 yards. Wide receiver
Erik Buchanan has a team-high 136 receiving yards on only five receptions.
After facing one of the nation's top offenses, the Colonel defense had a strong showing against Western Michigan, surrendering just three touchdowns while getting two interceptions and a pair of turnovers on downs. With two games in the books, linebacker
Davin Bovie leads the Southland with 18 tackles and safety
Jordan Hanberry is second with 17. Linebacker
Chris Bermond leads the team with two tackles for loss including one sack.
Louisiana-Lafayette hopes to have a repeat performance of the last meeting in 2011 which was head coach Mark Hudspeth's first victory with the Ragin' Cajuns. Although ULL is winless in 2013, it has faced superior competition as its losses came against Arkansas and last year's Big XII Champion Kansas State.
Quarterback Terrance Broadway directs the offense, throwing for 364 yards and two scores with a 56.9 completion percentage. As a sophomore, he started nine games and led ULL to its second consecutive trip to the New Orleans Bowl. In the backfield, Alonzo Harris has put up solid numbers, rushing for 130 yards and a touchdown while averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Jamal Robinson is the only Cajun with over 100 yards receiving as he leads the team with 10 grabs for 116 yards and one TD.
While the defense has surrendered an average of 41 points, linebacker
Justin Anderson ranks third in the NCAA in tackles with 14.5 per game. Ranking 20th in the nation is cornerback Sean Thomas, who is averaging 11 per outing.
Saturday marks the second meeting in the last three years and all three previous meetings have been played in Lafayette. ULL's three wins came in 1990 (24-21), 2001 (20-0) and 2011 (38-21).
