LAFAYETTE, La. – The Nicholls State University football team had trouble stopping Louisiana-Lafayette all day as the Ragin' Cajuns found the end zone seven times in the first half as Nicholls was defeated 70-7 on Saturday night at Cajun Field.

Nicholls falls to 1-2 on the year, with both losses coming against teams from the Football Bowl Subdivision. ULL improves to 1-2 and remains undefeated against the Colonels, holding a 4-0 all-time record.

Nicholls (1-2) was unable to get much going in the first half as ULL (1-2) outgained the Colonels on offense 413-158 despite the time of possession being almost equal. The Cajuns scored touchdowns on first six offensive possessions in the opening half and added a 58-yard interception return, which was one of three Colonel turnovers in the half. Nicholls gave up the ball five times for the game, three fumbles and two interceptions.

The Colonels chipped into the 49-0 deficit right before the intermission when Tuskani Figaro connected with Demon Bolt on a 36-yard touchdown. Figaro finished the day 5 of 11 for 77 yards and added 40 yards rushing on nine carries. Beaux Hebert started the game, completing 5 of 17 for 56 yards.

Nicholls was held to 141 on the ground, while ULL rushed for 481. Marcus Washington had 37 yards on seven carries, averaging 5.3 yard per carry. Twenty-nine of the yards came on the first snap of Nicholls three-play scoring drive in the second.

ULL wasted no time in taking the lead, scoring on the game's third play when Alonzo Harris ran 65 yards to the end zone. Terrance Broadway and Torrey Pierce added rushing TDs before Justin Anderson's interception return made it 28-0 Cajuns in the first quarter.

Nicholls put together a good drive early in the second, highlighted by a 33-yard diving catch by Xavier Marcus which moved the Colonels inside the red zone. Marcus led Nicholls with 54 yards receiving on three catches. However, the Colonels came up empty when Andrew Dolan's 36-yard field goal attempt sailed right of the upright. Dolan was 0-for-2 on the day, missing a 40-yarder in the third.

The Cajuns tacked on three more rushing touchdowns in the second before Figaro's pass to Bolt prevented the shutout, sending the teams into the locker with ULL holding a commanding 49-7 lead.

After the break, the Cajuns took advantage of a Bolt fumble on the Colonels' opening drive, scoring on a 25-yard pass from Broadway to Jamal Robinson. The scoring continued for ULL in the third as it extended its lead to 70-7 with two more rushing touchdowns.

Broadway led the Cajun offense, completing 10 of 13 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown. One of his incompletions came in the second quarter on an interception by Byron Cobb. Chris Bermond led Nicholls defense with eight tackles and had a 10-yard sack.

ULL finished with 620 yards on offense, doubling the Colonels which tallied 305. Elijah McGuire led the ground attack for the Cajuns, rushing for 137 yards and three scores on nine carries.

Nicholls will open up its 2013 home slate next Saturday (Sept. 21) against NAIA Langston University. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The contest will serves as the Hall of Fame Game with Nicholls inducting its six new members.
