Colonels Welcome Langston for 2013 Home Opener
Nicholls will look to even its record at 2-2 on Saturday against Langston

Colonels Welcome Langston for 2013 Home Opener

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University football team makes its 2013 home debut Saturday when the Colonels take on the Langston Lions at John L. Guidry Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The contest marks the first meeting between Nicholls (1-2) and Langston (0-2) and will kick off a three-game homestand for the Colonels. The game will be streamed live on Colonels All-Access with live audio available on the Colonel Sports Radio Network, which includes KLRZ 100.3 FM, KLEB 1600 AM and LA 106.3 Rock Hits Radio. Pregame coverage will begin at 2:30 p.m. with the Colonel Pre-Game Pass on KNSU 91.5 FM.

Nicholls heads into its home schedule with a 1-2 record after taking on three programs from the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Colonels have been on a rollercoaster so far, picking up one of the most significant wins in program history while also being handed two of the worst losses. Nicholls used a total-team effort in knocking off Western Michigan 27-23, but was defeated by 63 points in the games before and after against No. 3 Oregon and Louisiana-Lafayette, respectively.

The Colonels will be looking to extend their home-opener winning streak to five games and currently post a 28-13 record in their Guidry debuts. Over the last three seasons, Nicholls has won its home openers, all against NAIA programs, by a combined score of 159-45.

Langston, which competes in the Central States Football League of the NAIA, had a quasi-taste of the Southland last week as the Lions took on future SLC member Incarnate Word. The Lions held IWU to 24 points but could crack the scoring column, much like their 2012 meeting against Lamar which saw the Cardinals win 41-0.

The Lions' defense has been adequate in its first two outings, holding opponents to 422 yards of total offense.  Langston has two defenders averaging 10 or more tackles, Chace Green (10.5) and Isaiah Ross (10.0). Three players also have one sack on the year, including Ross.

The offense has struggled in its first two games, scoring only 10 points in the opener at Northern Colorado. The Lions are averaging under 200 yards on offense and less than 40 yards on the ground. Langston's lone touchdown was scored by wide receiver Cedric Jackson, who has seven catches for 72 yards. Jac'Quon Miles has took most of the snaps under center, throwing for 280 yards on 35-of-63 passing. Miles threw Langston's TD pass, but also has four interceptions.

The Colonels had their own problems on offense last week at ULL, mustering just over 300 yards and turned the ball over five times. Even when the Colonels were able to move the chains, Andrew Dolan was unable to convert it into points, missing from 40 and 36 yards out.

Despite having only seven carries at ULL, Marcus Washington continues to make his way towards the Colonel all-time career rushing list. Washington leads the team with two rushing touchdowns and 142 yards on the ground, giving him 1,556 yards for his career which is just 54 yards shy of cracking the top 10.

On defense, the Colonels are giving up a Southland-high of 625.7 total yards and 53 points per game. While the numbers are somewhat skewed with Oregon averaging nearly 700 yards and 60 points, Nicholls had trouble slowing ULL down as the Ragin' Cajuns rushed for eight touchdowns and passed for another.

Nicholls will continue its homestand next Saturday as the Colonels wrap up their non-conference schedule with a matchup against Arkansas Tech for homecoming. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
