Last Time Out
The Nicholls women's soccer team had to put in extra work to remain unbeaten last week, and after two comeback wins on the road the Colonels are now just one of four teams in the Southland that sit without a loss on the year. Nicholls came back from two goals down to defeat the ULM Warhawks in overtime last Friday, while coming from a goal back to tie and then eventually defeat Prairie View A&M 2-1 in Texas. The Colonels have played three consecutive overtime matches, the most since the 2009 season. The record for most overtime games played in a season at Nicholls is five which was set in 2004. The catalyst for those two wins came from sophomore
Spencer Valdespino who scored both game-winning goals to help power the team to victory. Against ULM, Nicholls got goals from
Lauren O'Brien and
Renee Bruns to start the comeback, while
Kristy Tatom netted the equalizer against the Panthers. Goalie
Taylor Mosley earned both wins on the weekend and had seven saves and one goal allowed in 117 minutes of action.
Scouting MVSU
Mississippi Valley State returns 14 letterwinners from its 2012 Southwestern Athletic Conference championship team, led by head coach Sonia Curvelo. The Devilettes have won three conference championships in the team's history, all coming since 2005 after officially noting the first year of record at the school in 2003. So far this season MVSU is 0-3 after dropping matches to Central Arkansas, Southern Miss and Southeastern Louisiana by a combined score of 17-0. Nicholls eeked out a 1-0 victory over the Devilettes last year in Mississippi, as MVSU owns the all-time series record with a 4-3 edge and 3-1 mark in Thibodaux.
Scouting Louisiana-Lafayette
At 1-2-2 on the season, the Ragin' Cajuns come into the match on Saturday earning their first win of the season last week in a 5-0 win over Northwestern State in Lafayette. ULL has had a tough stretch with losses to Ole Miss and SLU, tying with Jacksonville State and Southern. The Cajuns are led by forward Annika Schmidt who scored four goals last weekend in being named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week. Nicholls is 1-6 against ULL all-time, and will be looking to defeat the Ragin' Cajuns for the second time in as many tries in Thibodaux.
Up Next
Nicholls continues its home stand, closing out non-conference play against Alcorn State in Thibodaux at 4 p.m. next week.
