Nicholls will be aiming to improve to 3-1 in conference play
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Following another disappointing outcome on the road, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to earn a split in its first Southland roadtrip as the Colonels take on Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon at Johnson Coliseum.
The matchup between Nicholls (7-7, 2-1) and Sam Houston (5-9, 0-3) is scheduled to tipoff at 1:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the game live on KNSU 91.5 FM, with pregame coverage scheduled to begin at 1:15.
On Thursday night, Nicholls' defense away from Stopher Gym continued to be an issue as Lamar shot 48 percent from the field and made 12 3-pointers, with a majority coming off open looks. In the first two conference games, the Colonels played swarming defense as they did not give up more than 55 points in either of the wins. But that wasn't the case at Lamar when the Lady Cardinals scored 40 points in each half before going on to win 82-68.
Sophomore
Emani White and freshman
Taylor Morrison had solid outings in the loss, with White finishing with a double-double with 23 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. White continues to be one of the SLC's top scorers, averaging 19 points per game. Morrison provided a spark for the Colonels in the first half, knocking down four 3-pointers on her way to a personal best 14 points.
Nicholls has had no problems this season in terms of 3-point (.346) and free throw (.739) shooting, ranking first and second, respectively, in percentage in each category. Along with their high percentage, the Colonels are averaging 7.7 3-pointers per game, which ranks second in the Southland. However, Nicholls has not been able to find its stroke inside the arc, making only 39 percent of their non 3-point shots. Especially on the road, Nicholls is shooting only .356 as a team. In the loss at Lamar, the Colonels were held to under 40 percent for the seventh time in nine road/neutral games.
Sam Houston will be hoping to end a seven-game losing streak which dates back to Nov. 30. In conference play, the Bearkats lost by 21 at Northwestern State, 30 at Stephen F. Austin, and lost a close battle against McNeese at home on Thursday, 59-55. During the seven-game skid, Sam Houston has failed to score 60 points in each game, including scoring less than 50 points in three contests.
Post player Amanda Beadle leads the Bearkats, ranking ninth in the SLC in scoring (14.9) and second in rebounding (9.6). Beadle caused fits for the Colonels in Sam Houston's 14-point win in the last meeting as she had 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Sam Houston has won the last five meetings, improving its record in the all-time series to 31-18. Head coach
DoBee Plaisance is 1-5 against the Bearkats, winning the matchup in her inaugural season, 76-74, in 2008-09.
