Nicholls Places 70 On Commissioner’s Fall Honor Roll

Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll - Fall 2013

FRISCO, Texas –
Nicholls State University had 70 student-athletes recognized on the Southland Conference Commissioner's Fall Honor Roll it was announced today by the league office, being one of seven universities to have 70 or more make the cut after finishing the semester with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or better.

A total of 911 student-athletes were represented by the 14 member institutions – a new record for the conference – while 197 recorded 4.0 GPA's. All five of Nicholls' fall sports in men's and women's cross country, football, women's soccer and women's volleyball had at least four honorees.

The Nicholls football team led the way with 35 selections to the honor roll, with five of the 13 total 4.0 GPA earners, led by Jordan Hanberry who was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division I First Team, the first Colonel in any sport in school history to earn the award. Hayden Cardiff, Russ Gisclair, Geoffrey Hebert and Brian Hernandez were the other four with perfect marks, as Cardiff, Hebert and Hernandez are all underclassmen.

Next on the list was the Nicholls women's soccer team and their 22 overall selections, finishing with four unblemished grade-point averages in seniors Hilary Clark and Nicole Doherty, junior Amber Moore and sophomore Kaylie Daniels. Nicholls was also honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America with the Team Academic Award, which honors men's and women's soccer teams that have a combined team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Colonels are coming off of the best season in team history, ending the year with 12 wins, six conference wins and a return to the postseason for the first time since 2004.

Men's and women's cross country combined for nine honorees, paced by perfect GPA's from Tessni Carruthers, Sebie O'Neill and Sarah Pressley, while women's volleyball had four selections as Kalynn Egea earned distinction by maintaining a 4.0.
