Colonels Aim to Right Ship against Islanders on Saturday

THIBODAUX, La.  – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to put an end to its three-game losing streak as the Colonels welcome Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a Southland Conference Saturday matinee at Stopher Gym.

The game is slated to tip off at 1 p.m. and can be listened to on KNSU 91.5 FM. A live video stream is also available by signing up on Colonels All-Access.

Nicholls (7-9, 2-3) suffered its third consecutive loss after falling to Houston Baptist, 66-61, on Thursday. The Colonels had won 10 straight games at Stopher, but a nine-point halftime lead was not enough to stave off the Huskies, who claimed their first conference road victory since 2007. The three-game skid for the Colonels is the longest since the 2010-11 season where Nicholls ended the year on a six-game drought.

While the Colonels have had an off year so far in terms of field goal percentage, the team headed into the HBU game shooting 43 percent and averaging 84.6 points in its five home games. However, Nicholls was held to just 61 points against the Huskies on 39 percent shooting as the squad fell to under .500 in league play.

Emani White led the offense with 22 points, her fifth 20-point game of the season, to maintain her spot at No. 1 on the Southland's scoring list at 18.7 points per game. White has paced Nicholls in scoring 11 times this season, resulting in four victories. The sophomore native of New Orleans also added five steals in the loss to HBU and posts a Southland-best 2.7 steals per game.

Jenny Nash finished with nine points against the Huskies and continued to be the Colonels' top rebounder in Southland play as she collected five rebounds. In five conference games, Nash has had two double-doubles and ranks 11th at 7.8 rebounds per game.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-8, 1-4) also brings a three-game losing streak to the matchup after a 79-51 blowout at McNeese State on Thursday. The Islanders shot 38 percent in the loss as their leading scorer, Jasmine Shaw, was held to just four points. Shaw heads to Thibodaux as the Southland's fourth-leading scorer at 16.7 points per game.

Along with Shaw, Brittany Mbamalu is averaging double figures for the Islanders at 10.1 points. At McNeese, Mbamalu made five 3-pointers, accounting for all 15 of her points. As a team, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi ranks second in the Southland in 3-point percentage (.345) and fourth in 3-pointers per game (6.8), trailing Nicholls (.350/7.7) by one place in each category.

Nicholls swept the Islanders last season, winning 70-53 at home and 60-51 at Corpus Christi, to even the all-time series at 4-4. In the last outing, KK Babin scored a game-high 19 points to lead Nicholls to the nine-point win.

Following Saturday's game, Nicholls will play its third game in six days as the Colonels will head to Lake Charles to face McNeese State on Tuesday. Tipoff against the Cowgirls is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
