Colonels Face McNeese State for Tuesday Night Tilt

LAKE CHARLES, La.  – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to head into its bye week on a high note as the Colonels make the trek to Lake Charles for a Tuesday matchup against rival McNeese State at 5:30 p.m. at the Lake Charles Civic Center.

KNSU 91.5 FM will air the game live with pregame coverage scheduled to begin at 5:15. A Live stats link will be available on geauxcolonels.com.

Nicholls (8-9, 3-3) bounced back from its first home loss with a 67-60 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday. While the Colonels had four player score in double figures, it was Emani White who took control in the final minute to end Nicholls' three-game losing streak. White's buzzer-beating 3-pointer with 38 seconds remaining gave Nicholls a three-point lead, and the sophomore guard then put the game away with a steal and a layup on the ensuing possession.

White led Nicholls with 18 points with Jenny Nash adding 12 and seven rebounds. KK Babin played all 40 minutes for the 12th time this season, scoring seven of her 10 points in the first half while Jasmine Scott scored eight of her 10 after the break. Freshman Taylor Morrison, who made her seventh start of the season, chipped in with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting.

Leading the Colonels and the Southland in scoring is White, who is averaging 18.6 points on the year and 16.8 points in conference play, which ranks third. Nash is the only other Colonel averaging double figures at 10.5 ppg and the junior from Houston now leads the team in rebounding by one over freshman Marina Lilly, although they each average 5.4 per game.

The Colonels feature two of the league's top distributors as Babin ranks fourth in assists at 3.8 per game while White is dishing out 3.5 assists, good for seventh in the SLC. Babin, who recently moved up to third place on the Colonels' all-time scoring list with 1,319 points, ranks second on the career assists list with 421.

Last week, McNeese State (11-6, 4-2) blew out A&M-Corpus Christi by 28 before squeaking out a 66-62 win over Houston Baptist on Saturday. Both wins came at home, improving McNeese's mark in Lake Charles to 8-1 this season. However, Tuesday night marks the first of three games that McNeese will play at the Civic Center.

The Cowgirls are led by sophomore Allison Baggett, who is following in her twin sisters' footsteps in leading McNeese on offense with 18.2 points per game. After losing Ashlyn and Caitlyn Baggett to graduation, the younger Baggett has helped fill the void left by her older sisters, who combined to average 34.6 points last year.

Joining Baggett in double figures is Cecilia Okoye at 11.7 ppg, with Jayln Johnson third on the team at 9.1. Okoye was huge for McNeese in its tournament win over Nicholls last season, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson also had a strong outing, scoring 16 points and made 3-of-5 3-pointers.

McNeese has a significant lead in the all-time series, 53-14, despite the Colonels taking two of the three matchups last season. Nicholls won at McNeese, 78-61, and at home, 65-59, before falling in the second round of the Southland Tournament to the Cowgirls, 86-70.

The Colonels will have the upcoming weekend off, before returning to the court to host Oral Roberts on Jan. 30. In addition to an ESPN3 broadcast, the game will serve as a White Out, as all fans are encouraged to wear white to the game.
