Jasmine Scott and the Colonels look to extend their home winning streak to 10 games
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to go 2-0 in its opening weekend in conference play as the Colonels take on rival Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Stopher Gym.
The game will be broadcast live on KNSU 91.5 FM, with a live video stream available on Colonels All-Access.
Nicholls (6-6, 1-0) had a strong outing in its win over New Orleans on Thursday, defeating the winless Privateers 89-40. The win was the largest margin of victory for the Colonels under sixth-year head coach
DoBee Plaisance, who notched her 25th win in conference play.
Each player on the active roster scored in Thursday's game, led by
Emani White with 19 points. White has been a huge factor in the Colonels' success at home this season, averaging 23 points, three assists and three steals. The sophomore from New Orleans leads the Southland in scoring and ranks 43rd in the NCAA.
While Nicholls continues to rely heavily on its offense, which ranks third in the Southland in scoring (68.9 ppg), the Colonel defense held UNO to just 27 percent shooting and dominated in rebounding with a 68-26 advantage. The Colonels had struggled on the glass this season, being outrebounded in eight of 12 games. Nicholls heads into the game ranked eighth in the Southland with a minus-2.7 margin.
The Colonels will need solid play inside as Southeastern (2-11, 1-0) features two of the SLC's top rebounders – Nanna Pool (9.2) and Aja Gibson (7.1). The duo came up big in the Lady Lions' 82-65 win over McNeese as they combined for 30 points and 19 rebounds. Symone Miller, who leads SLU in scoring at 15.2 points per game, had a game-high 23 points on 7 of 12 shooting.
Southeastern comes to Thibodaux averaging 62.7 points per game on 40 percent shooting, which is the third best percentage in the Southland. The Lady Lions also feature one of the best 3-point defenses, limiting their opposition 29 percent. The Colonels lead the Southland in 3-pointers per game (7.7) and 3-point percentage (.346).
Southeastern leads the all-time series 55-16, but Nicholls earned a sweep last season after a 69-65 win in Thibodaux in their last meeting.
