The Nicholls State University women's basketball team needed only 10 minutes to gain a 20 point lead over Southland newcomer New Orleans as the Colonels won their conference opener 89-40 on Thursday night at Stopher Gym.

All 10 Colonels who suited up scored in the win, with New Orleans native Emani White leading four players in double figures with 19 points. Marina Lilly added 14 points and eight rebounds while Jenny Nash and JonMarie Guillory each scored 11.

Nicholls (6-6, 1-0) continued its stout play at home, limiting the winless Privateers (0-12, 0-1) to just 24 percent shooting. The Colonels finished at 42 percent, but rebounded 28 of their 42 missed shots. Nicholls collected an astounding 68 rebounds in the win while UNO had 26.

Nash gave the Colonels an early 4-0 lead, scoring two buckets off offensive rebounds, and then extended the advantage to double figures at 15-4 five minutes in with a layup. Jasmine Scott, who came off the bench for nine points, put Nicholls up 26-6 after knocking down her first career 3-pointer at the 10:52 mark.

The game quickly got out of hand as Nicholls outscored UNO 15-3 over the next five minutes to lead 41-9. The Red and Gray headed into the intermission with a 47-13 lead.

The Colonels scored the first six points of the second half, grabbing a 53-13 lead on a 3-pointer by White. Nicholls was a little off on its 3-point shooting, making only 4 of 15.

Nicholls' lead hovered around 40 points the rest of the way before ending the game on a 9-0 run to make the final.

Guillory was a force on the offensive glass, grabbing five which helped Nicholls to 30 second-chance points. Guillory tied Lilly with a team-high eight boards while Nash, Scott, Shay Arnick and Elexus Allen rounded out the leaders with seven rebounds each.

UNO was led by Danielle Davis with 13 points and Jewel Angelo with 11. Dating back to last season, the Privateers have lost 17 straight games and three straight to the Colonels.

Nicholls will look to win its 10th consecutive game at home as the Colonels host rival Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday, Jan. 4 at Stopher Gym. Tipoff against the Lady Lions is scheduled for 1 p.m.
