THIBODAUX, La. – Jenny Nash recorded the Colonels' first double-double of the year with 18 points and 10 rebounds and
Jasmine Scott added 17 points off the bench as the Nicholls State University women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in Southland play with an 84-55 victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gym.
With the win, Nicholls claimed its 10th consecutive victory at home and improved its overall record to 7-6. The victory was also the third straight against Southeastern Louisiana, which falls to 2-12 and 1-1.
Nash missed only three shots in the win, making 5-of-8 from the field, 4-of-5 from behind the arc and was 4-of-4 at the free throw line. As a team, the Colonels shot a season-high 48.4 percent from the field, thanks to three strong outings by post players
Marina Lilly,
JonMarie Guillory and Scott. Lilly scored 13 points on 6-of-10, Guillory had 10 points on 5-of-8 and Scott finished 8-of-14.
The game started out to be another classic battle between the in-state rivals as Southeastern grabbed a 9-7 lead after six minutes. But the Colonels smothered the Lady Lions over the next eight minutes, keeping SLU off the board as Nicholls went on a 17-0 run to lead 24-9. Following a layup by Guillory, Nash sank a 3-pointer to cap the run.
With less than five minutes until the break, Nash sparked another run with a 3-ball which led to a 14-2 run. Nicholls would head into the locker room with a commanding 45-17 lead.
On the Colonels' first possession of the second half,
Emani White found Lilly for a jumper to give the Colonels a 30-point advantage. Nicholls kept pouring it on and grabbed its largest lead at 16:46 with a 3-pointer by
Taylor Morrison, making the score 58-21. Morrison was one of three Colonels to finish with eight points, joining White and
KK Babin.
Nicholls kept the lead over 30 for the rest of game until the last minute when SLU scored six straight points before a pair of free throws by
Elexus Allen made the final 84-55.
The Colonels knocked down 9-of-17 from 3-point range, with Babin and Morrison adding two each. Nicholls also took advantage at the charity stripe, connecting on 13-of-17 (.765).
The Red and Gray outrebounded the opposition for the second straight game, finishing with a slim 38-35 margin. Nicholls racked up 17 assists, led by Babin with eight and White with six.
Southeastern shot 38 percent from the field and made only 4-of-20 from 3-point range. Aja Gibson was the lone Lady Lion in double figures with 12 points.
The Colonels will hit the road for the first time in conference play, taking on Lamar (Jan. 9) and Sam Houston State (Jan. 11) next week. Both games will be broadcast live on KNSU 91.5 FM.
