Nicholls Faces First Conference Road Test at Lamar

THIBODAUX, La. – After a pair of blowout victories at home , the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will make its first road trip in conference play starting with a matchup at Lamar on Thursday night.

Tipoff at the Montagne Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., and the game can be heard live on KNSU 91.5 FM. Pregame coverage will begin at approximately 5:15.

Nicholls (7-6, 2-0) opened conference play`with lopsided wins over rivals New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana, taking the two games by an average of 39 points. The Colonels shot .449 from the field and .406 (13-32) from behind the arc while also holding the advantage in rebounding (plus-22.5) and turnovers (plus-7).

The biggest improvement the Colonels had in the opening weekend was their defense. Nicholls held an overmatched UNO team to 24 percent shooting from the field in its 89-40 drubbing. Against Southeastern, the Colonels stifled the Lady Lions, holding SLU to a 38 percent clip from the field and 4-of-20 from behind the arc.

Jenny Nash led Nicholls in its first two Southland games, averaging 14.5 points and had the Colonels' first double-double of the season when she finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds against Southeastern. Nash is one of three Colonels averaging double figures in scoring this season, ranking second at 10.6 points per game. Emani White leads Nicholls with an 18.7 average while Marina Lilly is third at 10.2. KK Babin (9.6 ppg) and Jasmine Scott (8.2) round out the leading scorers.

Lamar (6-7, 1-1) is coming off a split in its opening week in conference, falling at SFA by 21 before picked up a big road win at Northwestern State, 84-79. Despite being outshot 59 percent to 48 percent, Lamar took advantage of 19 Lady Demon overs to score 25 points.

The Lady Cardinals have four players scoring in double figures, led by Dominique Edwards. Edwards not only ranks fourth in the league in scoring (17.1 ppg), but the 5-foot-11 forward is fourth in rebounding at 8.9 rebounds per contest. Gia Ayers is second on the team at 12.5 points, followed by Shauna Long (10.8), and JaMeisha Edwards (10.5), who led Lamar with 28 points in its win at NSU.

LU leads the all-time series 19-14 after each team defended its home court last season. Lamar won 59-57 on a buzzer beating putback by Ayers in Beamount, while Nicholls took the game in Thibodaux, 84-77, behind a career-high 22 points from Nash. Lamar has dominated the Colonels on its home floor with a 14-2 record with the Colonels' last win coming in the 2001-02 season.

Nicholls will wrap up the weekend at Sam Houston State on Saturday, with tipoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
