Nicholls will be looking to end its 13-game losing streak
THIBODAUX, La. – After staying within striking distance of its first victory of the season last weekend in front of its home crowd, the Nicholls State University football team will look to carry that momentum to end its winless drought as the Colonels play host to Lamar University at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at John L. Guidry Stadium.
As always, the game will be broadcast live on the Colonel Sports Radio Network which includes stations KLRZ-FM 100.3, KLEB-AM 1600, KJIN 1490 AM, KBZE 105.9 FM and KFRA 1390 AM. A live video stream is also available on Colonels All-Access on geauxcolonels.com.
The matchup will not only be the Colonels' second-straight home game, a first for the season, but it will also serve as the University's annual Family Day. From noon until 2:30 p.m., there will be inflatables and games for kids of all ages, live swamp pop music by Cameron Dupuy & the Cajun Troubadours, and concessions available including jambalaya, gumbo, po'boys, hotdogs, hamburgers and nachos. Concluding the pregame festivities will be the Colonel pep rally, featuring the Pride of Nicholls Marching Band.
Playing five of its first six games on the road, the Colonels had an inspired effort last Saturday at Guidry Stadium, battling with Stephen F. Austin in a 42-20 loss. Despite the final, the Colonels entered the fourth quarter trailing only 28-20 after scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter, both on career-long runs by
Tobias Lofton and
Michael Henry. Lofton's 66-yard touchdown fueled his first career 100-yard rushing game as he finished with 104 yards on seven carries, and Henry racked up 136 yards for his second 100-yard game in conference play this season.
While the Colonels' offense has struggled as a whole, Henry has been a consistent factor as he ranks second in the Southland in rushing with at 84.0 yards per game. In conference play, he is averaging 119.7 yards, which ranks third, and 7.3 per carry. Henry found the end zone two times against SFA, scoring on a 1-yard run to cap an impressive 96-yard drive and on a 41-yard run to end the third quarter.
Nicholls will most likely look to continue to run the ball as Lamar has allowed 196.4 yards per contest, ranking eighth in the league. In last week's 61-34 loss to defending champion Southeastern Louisiana, the Cardinals allowed two touchdown runs that were longer than 50 yards and gave up a total of 484 rushing yards to the Lions.
The Cardinals are led on offense by quarterback Caleb Berry, who torched the Colonels last season for 329 yards passing with five touchdowns. Berry enters the weekend ranked second in the SLC with 267.6 yards passing per game and has 15 touchdowns with five interceptions.
While Reggie Begelton has been Berry's primary target as he has a conference-high 37 catches for 471 yards and three TDs, former Houston Cougar Mark Roberts has been one of the biggest playmakers in the SLC. With only 20 receptions on the year, Roberts has 490 yards receiving and six touchdowns, averaging a league-best 24.5 yards per catch.
Lamar leads the all-time series 5-1 and has won all three matchups since returning to the Southland in 2011. Last season in Beaumont, the Cardinals rode Berry's arm to a 56-34 victory.
