THIBODAUX, La. – After a nearly two-week break from action, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team will host Northwestern State University at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
The Colonels (7-5, 3-2 SLC) were set to play Southern University and the University of Central Arkansas last week, but neither match was able to take place. Scheduling conflicts resulted in a cancelation of the matchup with the Jaguars, before torrential downpours forced the contest against the Sugar Bears to be rescheduled for Oct. 26.
Prior to back-to-back schedule-changes, Nicholls defeated Incarnate word University 3-1 and Lamar University 2-0, as
Haley Golden was named the Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week. The Colonels will try to pick up where they left of when they face the Demons (3-11-1, 0-6-1 SLC) on Friday.
Northwestern State hasn't picked up a win in over a month, and has been outscored 4-20 in that stretch, but will look to make a move in the second half of the conference season.
The Colonels are led by
Jess Coates, with four goals and a team-high five assists.
Spencer Valdespino had a team-leading five goals while
Emily Werenskiold has contributed two goals and four assists this season.
Esdeina Gonzalez leads the Demons with seven goals on the year, while Julia Ranalli has three assists and two scores.
Haley Golden (2-0) leads the Colonels this season having faced 34 shots with 13 saves and just one goal allowed. Golden enters Friday's match with a .929 save percentage, which would be good for first in the Southland Conference and fourth in the nation at the Division I level if she had played enough minutes to qualify.
Alex Latham (3-9-1) has started 13 games for Northwestern State, registering 58 saves and 33 goals allowed. Latham has a .637 save percentage on the season for the Demons.
The Colonels will take on Northwestern State Friday, before hosting Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
