Colonels Shutout Lamar 2-0 in Beaumont

BEAUMONT, Texas The Nicholls State University women's soccer team defeated Lamar University 2-0 at the LU Soccer Complex in Beaumont, Texas.

The Colonels (7-5, 3-2 SLC) earned a goal in each period to compliment a stifling defensive effort en route to victory over the Cardinals (3-7-1, 1-2-1 SLC) on Friday night.

The first score of the match came in the 30th minute by unconventional means. Spencer Valdespino fired a shot that was blocked by Lamar goalie Bailey Fontenot. When Fontenot tried to clear the ball, she inadvertently kicked it into a teammate, causing the ball fly back into the net for an own goal. Neither team would score for the remainder of the half.

In the 54th minute, Kaylie Daniels launched a corner kick that bounced around until it was eventually found my Emily Werenskiold. Werenskiold then chipped a pass to Jess Coates who fired a shot past Fontenot for the second and final score of the night.

Coates led the Colonels with two shots and one goal, while Werenskiold celebrated her 20th birthday by assisting on score.

Kristin Bos had five shots, three on goal to lead the Cardinals offensively.

Haley Golden (2-0) got her second start of the season, facing 18 shots and registering eight saves in the shutout. Golden now how a .929 save percentage for the year, which would be good for first in the Southland Conference and fourth in the nation at the Division I level if she had played enough minutes to qualify. (A goalie must play at least 50 percent of their team's minutes in order to be ranked.)

Fontenot (3-6-1) earned five saves and allowed two goals while facing 17 shots in the match.

The Colonels will take on Southern University in Baton Rouge at 6 p.m. on Thursday, before hosting Central Arkansas at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
