THIBODAUX, La. – After a tough five-set loss to Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday, the Nicholls State University women's volleyball team responded with an impressive 3-0 straight set victory over the University of New Orleans on Saturday in Stopher Gymnasium.
The Colonels (9-16, 5-7 SLC) came out swinging early and never trailed for the entire match on Saturday afternoon. Nicholls took the first set decisively by a 25-11 margin. The Privateers (6-21, 0-13 SLC) tried to keep things close in the second, but the Colonels pulled away for a 25-13 victory. Nicholls sealed the win with another 25-11 set in the third.
Kaci Eaton led the Colonels offensively with 10 kills and a .409 hitting percentage.
Stephanie Tobison contributed seven kills,
Kali Schwartz added six and
Emily Weimer finished with five in the match.
Kalynn Egea paced the defense with 17 digs while Schwartz added 10 and Tobison contributed eight.
Ainsley Marroccoli had a team-high 19 assists while
Alyse Barclay had 14. Weimer led the team with three blocks and Schwartz tied her season-high with six service aces.
Mikay Sellers Wiebe and Cara Sander led the offensive attack for New Orleans with six kills apiece. Lauren Levy had a team-leading 11 digs, while Sara Hammoutene had all 15 assists for the Privateers.
Nicholls will travel to San Antonio, Texas to face the University of the Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. on Thursday before heading to Abilene, Texas for a matchup against Abilene Christian at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
