Colonels Battle the Southeastern Lions for Postseason Life

HAMMOND, La. With only two games remaining in the regular season, the Nicholls State University women's volleyball team will travel to Hammond, La. for a battle with conference rival Southeastern Louisiana University at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.

The Colonels (9-18, 5-9 SLC) are currently eighth in the conference standings, just one game ahead of McNeese State University in the hunt for a postseason berth. Nicholls is hoping to rebound against the Lions (10-16, 7-7 SLC) and break out of a two-game slide.

Southeastern La. has lost two of its last three, but is coming off of a 3-2 victory against Lamar University on Saturday.

The Lions defeated the Colonels in a dramatic 3-2 match easier this season in Stopher Gymnasium. In the only meeting between the programs last season, Nicholls downed Southeastern La. 3-1.

A win for the Lions would secure a postseason spot for the squad, while a Colonel victory would be a major step towards grabbing the final Southland Tournament seed.

Kaci Eaton leads Nicholls offensively with 403 kills. She is currently second in the conference in kills and third in kills per set (4.14). Ainsley Marroccoli paces the squad with 601 assists on the season. Kalynn Egea is first in the conference in digs (532) and digs per set (5.66), while placing seventh in the conference in service aces (29). Emily Weimer has a team-high 65 blocks on the season.

Southeastern La. has demonstrated an extremely balanced offense in 2014 with six players registering 100 or more kills and four players with double-digit service aces. Mikayla Shippy leads the team in assists with 754. Four Lions have earned 100 or more digs with Morgan Todd pacing the squad at 472 digs on the season. Seven Southeastern La. players have double-digit blocks, led by Rachel Bunn with 87.

The Colonels battle the Lions on Tuesday before returning home for the regular-season finale against McNeese at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Stopher Gymnasium.
