THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team defeated the University of Mobile 92-65 on Wednesday night in the 2014-15 home opener.
Sam McBeath opened up the scoring for the Colonels with a three-pointer less than a minute into the ballgame. The Rams (2-1) kept the game close until
Luka Kamber nailed two three-pointers and
Richie Lewis added a fast-break layup off of a turnover to push the Nicholls lead to 15. The Colonels took a 45-25 lead into halftime after shooting 46.7% in the opening period.
Nicholls started the second half right where they left off as
T.J. Carpenter nailed a three to open the period. The Colonels' lead ballooned to as much as 25 in the second half as the squad grabbed a 59-34 lead with 16 minutes remaining. The two teams traded baskets throughout the remainder of the period as the Rams chipped away slowly at the Nicholls' lead.
With just 5:51 remaining, Dillon Pollard sunk a jumper from the top of the key that brought Mobile within 12. The Colonels responded with a 15-4 run to close out the game, pulling away in the final minutes to seal the victory.
Nicholls finished the game shooting lights out at 49.2% from the field and 39.3% from behind the arc. The Colonels finished on top in almost every statistical category, outscoring Mobile 36-26 in the paint, 14-4 on fast break points and 52-30 off the bench. The most glaring statistical victory for Nicholls was their dominant 33-11 points-off-turnovers margin.
McBeath led the team in scoring with 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Lewis finished with 13 points and a team-high eight assists on the night.
Denzel Flemings paced the squad with seven rebounds and added 12 points, while Kamber contributed 14 points.
Will Hornsby dominated the scoring for the Rams with 19 points and added a team-leading eight rebounds in the game. Former Colonel
Piers Carroll, who transferred to Mobile after last season, finished with 13 points and four rebounds in the loss. No other Ram reached double digits.
The 2014-15 Nicholls schedule sets up to be another daunting task for the team as the group will square off with the likes of North Texas, UCLA, Wake Forest, Michigan and Louisiana Tech in the non-conference portion before jumping into an expanded Southland Conference lineup in January.
The Colonels will next travel to Denton for a matchup against the University of North Texas at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 17, before making the trip to Los Angeles for a battle with UCLA.
