Colonels Drop Regular-Season Finale to Sam Houston

HUNTSVILLE, Texas After a dramatic victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Friday to solidify a Southland Conference Tournament berth, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team lost their regular-season finale to Sam Houston State University, 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Colonels (9-9, 5-6 SLC) entered Sunday's contest having already secured a spot in the SLC tournament, but sought to improve their standing and gain momentum in their final match of the season against a tough Bearkat team.

After 67 minutes of scoreless action, Sam Houston (9-8-1, 8-2-1 SLC) picked up the aggressiveness as Madison Bible fielded a pass from Mariah Titus and found the back of the net for the game's first score. In the 84th minute, the Bearkats added an insurance goal by Megan Bennett off of a pass from Bible.

Spencer Valdespino led Nicholls with three shots, two on goal, while Kaylie Daniels added two shots, one on goal.

Bible had a score and an assist to lead Sam Houston offensively in the match.

Colonel Goalkeeper Taylor Mosley (5-8) faced 14 shots, earning five saves and giving up two goals in the loss.

Kylie Hambleton (8-7-1) was in the net for the Bearkats, facing nine shots and registering four saves in the shutout victory.

During the match, Nicholls forward Lauren O'Brien was awarded a red card after she was kicked by a Sam Houston player while lying on the ground and retaliated. O'Brien will be suspended for the opening match of the conference tournament.

With the win the Bearkats secure the No. 3 seed and will face Southeastern La. in the opening match of the tournament on Thursday.

The Colonels entered the match in a three-way tie for fourth among tournament-eligible teams and will finish as the fifth seed after today's loss, coupled with a loss by Southeastern La.

Nicholls will travel to Beaumont, Texas for a rematch against McNeese State University at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6 in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament.
