Nicholls Basketball Prepares for Battle Against Spring Hill

THIBODAUX, La. After an eight-day break for the Christmas holiday, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team will return to action against Spring Hill College at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Stopher Gym.

The Colonels (2-7) had sufficient time to regroup after a heartbreaking 65-64 loss on Dec. 21 to Troy University that came on a last-second buzzer-beating layup. The Badgers (1-8) have struggled this season and are coming off of a 76-64 loss to Loyola on Dec. 17, but had nearly two weeks to prepare for tomorrow's ballgame.

Nicholls has won six of the last seven matchups with Spring Hill and owns the all-time series 22-11. The Colonels have defeated the Badgers in four straight contests and earned an 85-68 victory in the last meeting between the programs on Dec. 1, 1992.

Through nine games Nicholls is averaging 63.6 points while surrendering 78.8, but has played significantly better at home with a +11.3 scoring margin. The Colonels are shooting 41.7 percent from the field and 28.3 percent from three-point range this season, while giving up 45.7 percent from the floor and 39.2 percent from beyond the arc. Nicholls has a -2.8 rebounding margin and -3.3 turnover margin.

Amin Torres leads the Colonels offensively, averaging 13.4 points per game despite coming off the bench in all nine contests, and is shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from three-point range. Sam McBeath paces the squad with 6.9 rebounds per game and Richie Lewis has a team-high 2.4 assists per game average.

Robert Drummond spearheads the Badgers' offensive attack with 11.5 points per game while Sam Hutcheson averages a team-leading 5.6 rebounds. Clarke James and Jarrett Calhoun each have a 2.2 assist per game average.

Nicholls hosts Spring Hill on Tuesday before traveling to Beaumont, Texas for a 6 p.m. matchup with Lamar University on Saturday, January 3. Tuesday's contest will be broadcast live on KQKI 95.3 FM.
