NEW ORLEANS – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team's shooting woes continued Wednesday as Tulane held the Colonels to 29 percent from the field for the night, handing Nicholls a 77-44 loss at Devlin Fieldhouse.
Nicholls (2-3) not only struggled shooting, but the Colonels were outrebounded 52-30 by Tulane, which improved its record to 6-1 on the year. The Green Wave also won their 14th straight game against the Colonels, upping its record in the all-time series to 30-12.
The Colonels failed to have a scorer in double figures for the first time this season, but were led by
Shay Arnick with nine points off the bench.
Veronica Ryan added eight points and
Jenny Nash had seven points and eight rebounds. Nicholls was without its leading scorer,
Emani White, who missed the game with an injury.
Both defenses played well in the early going as Tulane led 10-9 after the first nine minutes. The Colonels saw their only lead of the game when Nash found
Ekiya Gray for a layup off a screen-and-roll, giving Nicholls an 11-10 edge midway through the first half.
But the Green Wave regained the lead and pushed it to as much as 13 before going into the half with a 34-23 lead. Tulane took advantage of 13 turnovers in the period, turning them into 13 points.
Nash scored a bucket on the first possession to cut the deficit back to single digits, but it would be as close as the Colonels would get the rest of the way.
Nicholls shot only 15 percent from behind the arc, making just 1-of-12 in the second half. Tulane shot 45 percent from the field and was 6-of-18 from 3-point range.
Kolby Morgan led the Green Wave with 15 points, while Leslie Vorpahl and Chinwe Duru chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Nicholls will play its second home game of the season, hosting South Alabama on Saturday, Dec. 6 in the first game of a women's/men's basketball doubleheader. Tipoff at Stopher Gym is scheduled for 1 p.m.
