Nicholls has won its last three home openers
THIBODAUX, La. – After coming up short in an opening series sweep at Houston, the Nicholls State University baseball team will open up at Ray E. Didier Field on Tuesday night against Loyola University New Orleans.
Tuesday's game will begin a stretch of 15 home games for the Colonels (0-3) over the next four weeks. Nicholls has home games scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week for the Carmel Inn Showdown presented by The Sports Medicine Center of Thibodaux Regional.
At Houston, Nicholls was held to a .155 batting average on 15 hits, as the Colonels suffered their first opening weekend sweep since 2010.
Philip Lyons and
Christian Correa accounted for three hits each, with Lyons driving in both runs of Nicholls' 3-2 loss on Sunday. Lyons was also one of four Colonels to record a double, joining
Keith Cormier,
Tyler Duplantis and
Justin Holt.
Despite the offense being shutout in back-to-back games for the first time since April of 2009, the pitching staff threw fairly well against the Cougars, posting a collective 3.38 earned run average with 19 strikeouts. Of the starters,
Taylor Byrd had the best outing for the Colonels, giving up a run while strikeout out six in five innings.
Loyola heads to Thibodaux with a 5-4 record after taking the middle game of their series at Mobile. The Wolf Pack, who competes in the NAIA, brings a .260 team batting average and 49 runs scored. Third baseman John Nicholson leads the way for LU with a .448 average, four doubles and eight RBIs.
On the bump, Kevin Lindsey has a team-best 2-1 record in three starts. In 16-plus innings of work, Lindsey has given up just one earned run while striking out four. In Loyola's first game of its Saturday doubleheader at Mobile, Lindsey earned the W after pitching a complete seven-inning game.
The matchup against the Wolf Pack will broadcast live on KTIB 640 AM, with an online stream available on Colonels All-Access.
