With the Southland Conference Tournament a few weeks away, Saturday's matchup has huge postseason implications as nine teams are only separated by two games. The Colonels (13-11) and McNeese (15-9) are currently in a three-way tie with Stephen F. Austin for third place at 8-5, but Nicholls has the upper hand with wins over both teams. Nicholls defeated the Cowgirls earlier this season 71-63 at the Lake Charles Civic Center.
The Colonels split their four-game road swing after falling on a last-second shot at Southeastern Louisiana last Saturday. The Lady Lions broke a 66-tie with a basket underneath with 1.7 seconds left, and a half-court heave by
Jenny Nash was just off the mark as the final buzzer sounded.
Emani White scored 17 points in the loss and remains atop of the Southland scoring leaders at 18.7 points per game. McNeese's Allison Baggett is just behind White, tied for second at 17.8 ppg. In the matchup in Lake Charles, White led Nicholls with 22 points while fellow sophomore Baggett was held to five points.
Although the Colonels did a great job on defense containing the Cowgirls' leading scorer, Nicholls had no answer for Cecilia Okoye, who had 17 points and 19 rebounds in the matchup. McNeese outrebounded the Colonels 53-36, but Nicholls took the turnover battle, 10-21.
McNeese heads to Thibodaux on a two-game winning streak after defeating last-place New Orleans on Sunday, 84-54. Jayln Johnson led the way over the Privateers, scoring 26 points with 14 coming from the charity stripe.
