Nicholls took 2 of 3 against Tulane last season
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team will host their second straight opponent from New Orleans for a Tuesday night battle, as the Colonels welcome the Tulane Green Wave on Feb. 25 at Ray E. Didier Field.
First pitch against Tulane (6-1) is scheduled for 6 p.m., with a live radio broadcast available on KTIB 640 AM. A video stream will also be offered on Colonels All-Access.
Following three losses to Houston, which is undefeated on the year including a win over No. 11 Rice, the Colonels' started their home slate with a 9-0 win over Loyola New Orleans last Tuesday. In the Carmel Inn Showdown presented by the Sports Medicine Center of Thibodaux Regional, Nicholls continued its run with two more wins, defeating Western Illinois, 2-1, and ULM, 3-0. In Saturday's finale, the Colonels were outlasted by Southern Illinois, 8-7, in 11 innings.
After seven games, Nicholls (3-4) has been carried by its pitching staff, which posts a 1.89 ERA. Senior
Taylor Byrd had the highlight performance of the season so far, striking out a career-high 11 batters in seven shutout innings against ULM. Closer
Marc Picciola picked up his second save of the season in the victory over the Warhawks, keeping his ERA at 0.00 in five appearances.
Left-hander
Mike Hanchar is scheduled to make his second start for Nicholls, looking to duplicate his one-hit performance against the Loyola Wolf Pack. Hanchar pitched four innings against the 'Pack, striking out five and had three walks.
At the plate,
Leo Vargas and
Philip Lyons are the only two Colonels batting over .300, with Vargas leading the way at .348. Vargas hit .538 for the week to extend his hitting streak to five games while Lyons hit .429 to up his average to .346. Lyons led the team with six runs, five walks and five stolen bases.
Tulane started the season with four wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff before taking the first two games of a three-game set at Louisiana Tech. A four-run third with two outs helped aid LA Tech to a 5-2 win to avoid the sweep.
The Green Wave are batting .301 as a team, and before Sunday's loss, scored double digit runs in three consecutive games. In Saturday's game in Ruston, Tulane put 16 runs on the scoreboard off 19 hits. Garrett Deschamp had monster game, going 4-for-5 with a double and six RBIs.
Deschamp is one of two players batting .400 or better, and he leads the Green Wave with 16 RBIs. Andrew Garner has a team-high .444 average and two home runs.
Right-hander Tyler Mapes will notch the start for Tulane, coming in with a 1-0 record and a 2.25 ERA. Mapes earned the win in the Green Wave's 3-2 victory over Pine Bluff, pitching four innings with one earned run on six hits.
Following Tuesday night's game, Nicholls will wrap up its seven-game homestand with two games against Jackson State, starting Thursday. The contests are part of a four-game series against the Tigers, with the final two games scheduled to be played in Jackson, Miss. on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday's game was originally scheduled for 6 p.m., but has been moved up to a 1 p.m. first pitch.
