Leo Vargas had one of the Colonels' two hits against Tulane
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – The Colonel pitching staff held Tulane to no runs through seven innings, but a leadoff double in the eighth led to an unearned run as the Nicholls State University baseball team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Green Wave on Tuesday night at Ray E. Didier Field.
While Nicholls (3-5) did a remarkable job of holding Tulane's offense in check, which came into the game with a.301 batting average, the Green Wave (7-1) gave up just two hits to the Colonels and allowed only four base runners.
Charles Morton and
Leo Vargas both had singles, and two other Colonels reached on a hit-by-pitch and an error.
Making his first start in almost a year for Tulane, Tyler Mapes (1-0) should no signs of any rust, striking out seven batters in seven innings. Mapes did not allow a hit until Morton led off the fifth with a single up the middle.
Jason McDonald (0-1) took the loss for Nicholls after giving up two hits in the eighth. The first came on a Jake Rogers double to right center which set up the only run of the night. Looking to move Rogers over to third, Richard Carthon laid down a perfect bunt, and Colonel third baseman
Tyler Duplantis threw the ball past first, allowing Rogers to score.
Trailing 1-0, Nicholls had its second hit when Vargas singled with one out in the eighth. After a fielder's choice, Rogers threw a laser from behind the plate to gun down pinch runner
Darius Knight trying to steal second.
Tulane's Andrew Garner struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save of the year.
Mike Hanchar started for Nicholls, pitching four shutout innings without allowing a hit. Hanchar finished with three strikeouts while walking two. Out of the bullpen,
Cole Stapler gave up three hits in two innings, and
Stuart Holmes surrendered a base knock in the seventh.
Zach Thiac pitched the ninth and retired the Green Wave in order.
Stapler got into a bit of a jam in the fifth, but Morton kept the game scoreless with a great play in left field. With two outs, Tulane got a single and a walk to put a runner in scoring position, and Carthon followed with a roller through the left side. Morton fielded the ball and fired a strike to home to throw out Stephen Alemais to end the inning.
Carthon led Tulane with two of its six hits and added a pair of walks.
Nicholls will wrap up its seven-game home stand with the first half of a four-game set against Jackson State, starting Thursday. First pitch at Ray E. Didier Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
