Colonels Fall To Lumberjacks, 93-64

Final Stats NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Jeremy Smith scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, but the Nicholls State University men's basketball team would be unable to cool off the hot shooting of the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Thursday night, falling 93-64 in Johnson Coliseum in Nacogdoches.

Smith led a trio of Nicholls (10-9, 7-3 SLC) players in double figures on the night, as Dantrell Thomas finished with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting as well, making all five free throws he took on the night. The final Colonel with double-digit points was Amin Torres who scored a season-high 12 points on 4-of-9 from the field.

Owning the longest home-court winning streak in the nation, the Lumberjacks (21-2, 10-0) remained perfect at home on the season after shooting 57 percent as a team in the game, with five players scoring in double figures. Where Nicholls had just two starters with more than ten points, SFA had four led by Thomas Walkup's 17, as nine different players scored in the contest and eight finishing with eight or more points.

The Colonels found themselves in a deep hole early as the team went into the halftime break trailing the Lumberjacks 55-17 after the first 20 minutes. Nicholls made just 6-of-17 shots in the frame while SFA sunk 22 on just 35 attempts for a staggering 63 percent clip, including six 3-pointers. Torres led the group with seven points, as just five players accounted for any points in the half.

Stephen F. Austin at one point led by as many as 41 points early in the second half, even though Nicholls put together an impressive second outscoring the Lumberjacks 47-38 in the final period, as Smith scored 15 of his 18 and Thomas scored all of his 17 after being held without a bucket in the first. The Colonels shot 64 percent, making their only two 3-pointers of the night in the process. The team also got to the line a lot more, making 13-of-16 in the second after converting on 5-of-11 in the first.

Due to the high volume of both teams in differing periods, there were not many rebounds to be had on either side as SFA outrebounded the Colonels by three (28-25) and got 10 on the offensive end which turned into 17 Stephen F. Austin second chance points. The Lumberjacks lived in the paint outscoring Nicholls 40-36, while getting 29 points off of 20 total Colonel team turnovers.

Nicholls will be back in action on Saturday night, taking on the Northwestern State Demons at Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches.
