Keith Cormier was 2-for-4 with a triple Saturday night at Jackson State
Final Stats JACKSON, Miss. – One night after the Nicholls State University baseball team let an 8-0 lead slip away, the Colonels managed to hang on for a 6-4 win at Braddy Field behind a pair of RBIs from junior outfielder
Charles Morton.
Morton delivered a double and scored a run, while senior outfielder
Keith Cormier went 2-for-4 with a triple and scored twice. Nicholls (5-6) capitalized on five Tiger errors, leading to five unearned runs.
Cormier crossed on a Jamal Wilson wild pitch in the 2nd before Nicholls tacked on three runs in the 4th. In that frame, Morton doubled home Cormier while two more runs crossed on an error by JSU (6-4) rightfielder Fred Hampton.
The Tigers' Bryce Taylor notched an RBI groundout off Nicholls junior righthander
Ryan Deemes in the 4th to cut the Colonel lead to 4-1.
The Colonels replied with an RBI double by senior infielder
Tyler Duplantis in the 5th.
But, a Deemes wild pitch in the 6th plated Alvin Franklin before Jose Cruz belted a two-run home run off Nicholls reliever
Stuart Holmes in the 7th to pull JSU within a run.
Nicholls got a measure of insurance in the 8th with Morton's sacrifice fly RBI off Kendrick Walk, chasing in Duplantis. The bullpen combination of
Zach Thiac and
John Satriano closed it out, allowing just one hit between them. Satriano fanned a pair in the 9th for his first save as a Colonel.
Deemes registered the win, allowing two runs on three hits in six innings. He walked one and fanned three, improving his record to 1-1. Wilson took the loss for JSU, falling to 1-1 after yielding five runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and a strikeout in seven frames.
Both clubs recorded six hits, with Franklin leading JSU with two.
The win puts the Colonels up 2-1 in the series, which concludes with Sunday's contest. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. in Jackson.
