Colonels to Tussle with No. 8 LSU

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team will head to Baton Rouge for a Tuesday night matchup against No. 8 Louisiana State University at Alex Box Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The game will air live on KTIB 640 AM, with pregame coverage scheduled for 6:15.

Nicholls (8-8) is coming off a split in its four-game series against BYU over the weekend, which the Colonels' took the final two games after being no-hit in the opener. In the last three games, Nicholls had a .306 team batting average with three doubles, a triple and 22 runs scored.

Senior outfielder Keith Cormier led the way with nine hits in the three games for a .643 average. Cormier had six RBIs, including game-tying singles in the seventh and 11th innings in the Colonels' 7-6 extra innings loss on Friday. Cormier had a stretch of eight consecutive at-bats where he reached base, pounding out seven singles and a walk.

Junior outfielder Darius Knight also had a big week, hitting .500 with a double and three runs scored. Knight swiped two bags in the series as Nicholls stole five in the four-game set.

For the year, Cormier and Philip Lyons lead the Colonels with 20 hits each and a combined 21 RBIs, with Cormier batting a team-best .323. Lyons is at .286 and has a team-high five doubles to go along with his 10 RBIs.

On the mound, Nicholls received two outstanding performances by left-handers Taylor Byrd and Grant Borne on Friday and Saturday, respectively, getting a combined 20 strikeouts while allowing only 10 hits and two runs. Byrd fanned nine Cougars in eight innings in the Colonels' 10-2 victory Friday night, and Borne followed up with a career-high 11 Ks to lead Nicholls to a 6-1 win in the finale.

Fellow leftie Mike Hanchar (0-0) is scheduled to throw against the No. 8 Tigers (14-2). Hanchar has yet to earn a decision on the year after notching starts against Loyola and Tulane. He heads into the game with a 0.00 ERA in eight innings of work, allowing one hit with eight strikeouts and five walks.

The Tigers are scheduled to throw right-hander Brady Domangue (1-0). In his only start on the year, Domangue pitched 3.0 innings in LSU's 8-1 win over Sacred Heart, allowing one run on three hits. The victory over Sacred Heart was one of five for LSU last week, which went 5-0 to improve to 14-2. The Tigers won at Northwestern State by the same score, and went on to sweep Purdue at home over the weekend with 10-0, 4-2 and 7-3 wins. 

LSU heads into the matchup with a .319 batting average and has scored 37 runs in its last five games. The Tigers have three players batting .400 or better - Kade Scivicque (.455), Andrew Stevenson (.432) and Alex Bregman (.429). Bregman is coming off a solid week where he hit .500 with a home run and six RBIs.

Following Tuesday night's game, the Colonels will open Southland play with a three-game series against Houston Baptist at Ray E. Didier Field, starting Friday at 6 p.m.
