Final Stats 2 THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team returned home with hopes of recording its first conference win of the season, but Lamar took game one of Saturday's doubleheader at the Colonel Softball Complex 3-1 before run-ruling the Colonels 12-3 in five innings in game two.
Nicholls (8-21, 0-5) and Lamar (9-10, 4-1) will close out the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Game 1 – Lamar 3, Nicholls 1
Danielle Phillips was 2-for-3 with an RBI triple, but Lamar's Tina Schulz tossed a complete game and added an insurance run with a homer in the sixth as the Cardinals took game one 3-1.
Jackie Johnson (6-12) had a solid effort in the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits and struck out five. Schulz surrendered the lone run in the sixth on Phillips' triple, which was one of five hits for the Colonels.
LU took the lead in the second after a triple by Beverly Corry led to a run on an illegal pitch. The Colonels had a golden opportunity in the third with the bases loaded and only one out, but
Colleen Levy grounded into an inning-ending double play.
In the fourth, Lamar doubled the lead on a RBI single by Corry. The Lady Cardinals threatened again in the next frame, but Johnson forced a pop out to leave the bases loaded.
Levy led off the Colonel sixth with a triple down the right field line, and Phillips followed with her triple to left. However, Schulz retired the next three Colonels to keep the score at 3-1. In the seventh, Nicholls was sat down in order to push its losing streak to five games.
Game 2 – Lamar 12, Nicholls 3 (5 innings)
Lamar hit a pair of three-run home runs in the third to fuel an 11-run inning as the Colonels were defeated 12-3 by mercy-rule.
Lamar cranked out 13 hits, with six coming in the third. Shannon Millman tossed all five innings for LU, allowing three runs on five hits.
After Lamar went up 1-0 in the top of the second, Nicholls took their only lead of the day after plating two runs in the bottom half.
Olivia Van Hook drew a bases loaded walk, and
Brooke Morris ripped a shot between third and short for an RBI single.
But the lead was short lived as
Hannah Haydel (1-7) issued two walks before Schulz jacked her second homer of the day. After another walk, Haydel was relieved by
Taylor Hastings, but the Lady Cardinals continued to pour it on. LU had five more hits, capped on a three-run shot by Lauren Gambone to make the score 12-2.
Phillips added an RBI single in the bottom of the third, but the Colonels were never able to get any closer to prevent the run-rule.
Morris led Nicholls at the plate with two hits, while
Caitlyn Carroll and
Cari Spain added one hit each. In the circle, Haydel walked six and gave up five runs in two innings, Hastings surrendered six runs in 0.2 innings, and
